Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at 5:07PM Several years ago, TIVFD held meetings with VIHA and the administrators who were planning the new Cowichan Hospital. At the time, we laid out what we thought was needed, which included a Telehealth Terminal, and told them a medical space would be included in the plans for a new Forbes Hall. The hall was built, including a care station, which included a VIHA Terminus for Telehealth.
A leftover from business created by the Program Outreach Committee, before the Forbes Hall became occupied, Shirley Burr was tasked with finding a way to get some medical and health services operating in the hall. Not being familiar with the demographic or needs particular to Thetis she asked Jeannine Caldbeck with her knowledge and resources to attend Zoom meetings with VIHA to give them a clearer picture.
Upon completion of the building and the appointment of Ann Dickie as Acting Facilities and Community Coordinator, the Forbes Hall Health Services Committee of Ann Dickie, Jeannine Caldbeck and Shirley Burr was formed, and a working relationship has been developed with some of the senior administrators of VIHA and their teams. Several virtual meetings have taken place and we are now in discussion as to how to get some practitioners in place. Each of these meetings brings new needs and circumstances to light which narrows the focus. However, the process is slow and will continue to be for some time to come but we are finding that we are being considered as important members of an active team, and that our requests are being taken seriously.
At this time, we feel that we need an ambassador from the Thetis community, someone who will communicate important information to the community, field questions from individuals who may or may not have specific needs, and who will direct potential clients in the right direction. As well, this person would at times, outreach to non-VIHA Health Practioners to consider offering their services on Thetis via Forbes Hall. This would be a volunteer position for a person who is approachable and who has no further agenda. This person would be required to circulate important notices and requests as needed.
Please feel free to contact the Forbes Hall Health Services Committee for more information if you are interested in applying for this position.

Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at 4:50PM Dear Thetis community - Would you like to support the Thetis island elementary students? One hour has a much greater impact than you think!
As most of you know, I have been the educational assistant (former teacher assistant) at our one room school for the last five years. Aside from the teacher, myself, and the custodian, the school also employs a noon hour supervisor (NHS). The NHS supervises the students for one hour during which I take my lunch and coffee breaks together with the teacher. Currently the NHS position is being vacated, which means I have to perform those duties, and then take my breaks afterwards.
This has the following impacts:
-The teacher is left alone to instruct and supervise the students which is much more challenging in a multi grade school like ours.
-The students don’t get the full support from me.
-The teacher and I do not have that time to plan and collaborate, which affects our day to day instructions.
- I know from experience that in the long run this has a very negative effect on everyone.
Please consider becoming either a full time, or even an on-call NHS. ($25.50/hour, 11:30 - 12:30, qualifications: Grade 12 education, first Aid)
If you need a First Aid certificate, the Thetis island community fund has generously offered to pay the course and ferry costs to a successful applicant.
On behalf of our students, and with gratitude,
Simone Luckham

Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at 4:49PM I have a temporary fix on the Post Office and its back in service.
I have 3 days worth of packages and parcels to catch up on and will try to get through all of them as fast as I can.
All post office services are active now.
Sorry for any inconveniences.

Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at 4:48PM We spoke too soon!
In a Monday work party, the trail committee discovered that the water in the meadow portion of the trail is over ankle deep.
The trail is therefore closed from the entrance at the Fire Hall to the Dingly Dell junction until the waters have receded.
