Sunday, October 3, 2021 at 8:53AM I am truly honoured to live in such a great community. Thank you for your support and kind words at the CVFSA Award event Saturday at Forbes Hall. There are so many to thank for the special day.
Fortunately, it was explained to me beforehand that a Lifetime Achievement Award didn’t necessarily mean I was dead, so I got to have my cake and eat it too!
Again, thank you all.
Jeannine

Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 7:09PM Congratulations to David Reay, winner of the ThINC Plant Foraging Photo Contest! His winning shot of the scrumptious Rubus leucodermis—also known as Blackcap or Black Raspberry—can be seen on the ThINC Facebook page. Have a look and a like!
Thank you to all who submitted to the contest; you are helping in the continued effort to build our local knowledge resources! You can find your photos in the updated Foraging Guide on the main ThINC website.
Finally, a special shout-out to Pat English, who shared with us a beautiful shot of a Chocolate Lily (Fritillaria camschatcensis). Due to its delicate nature and protection as a part of the Garry Oak Meadow ecosystem, we will not be including the species in the guide, but we will be posting her shot on the Facebook page as well to be admired by all.
Happy Foraging!

Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 6:10PM Happy October, islanders.
The library is open today with a Friend of the Library on duty. 10-1.
Tomorrow, tea and treats from 1-4.
There is a good selection of picture books.
Do you like historical fiction? The Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear follows a psychologist investigator beginning in WW I. A very satisfying read!
Also, three new knitting books.
Enjoy the lovely new library space.

Thursday, September 30, 2021 at 8:37AM We look forward to welcoming the community to congratulate Fire Chief Jeannine Caldbeck for her Lifetime Achievement Award. We are expecting a number of Jeannine's family and fire service personnel from around BC to be in attendance.
The COVID capacity of Forbes Hall is 105, not including wait staff.
If more than 105 people attend, we will use the outdoor patios to comply with Covid regulations.
We plan to start at noon, with a brief welcoming address followed by the award presentation and some speeches. There will be an opportunity for guests to publicly offer their congratulations to Jeannine.
Sandwiches, cake and light refreshments will be served following the program.
PHO Compliance
Proof of Vaccination is mandatory, and will be checked at the point of entry (to the left of the main entry). Please bring picture ID to facilitate a quick entry into the hall.
Masks must be worn, unless sitting in a designated place while eating.
We ask everyone to be respectful of the protocols in place, and to physically distance whenever possible. Outdoor areas will be available to help us accommodate all that want to attend.
Thank you in advance for helping us to make this a very special occasion.

Thursday, September 30, 2021 at 8:36AM We will be opening up backyard burning with permits on Friday for the month of October and for the months following to April 1st, 2022, no permits are required. This is not true for the rest of the communities in the Cowichan Valley Regional District, including Area G (Thetis Island is located in Area G). All CVRD areas are restricted to only two open burning periods during the year…March 15 to April 15, and October 15 to November 15. During those two periods the open burns must meet ALL provincial smoke control regulations.
We have argued successfully in the past that Thetis Island be treated differently due to our restricted access to CVRD waste sites for disposal of coarse woody debris and our location. We urge you to follow the Provincial Smoke Control Act regulations when deciding to have an open burn this fall, winter, and spring. Failure to comply, such as burning on days prohibited by the Venting Index, burning continuing after the allowed time of day, unattended burning etc. could result in Thetis Island losing the special considerations afforded our island by the Regional District. We would then be forced to comply to the schedule set out by the CVRD for the rest of the region. Please follow the venting index rules and open burning regulations. Non-compliance could affect everyone else’s ability to burn yard waste during the months ahead.
Thank you,
TIVFD
