NUTRIA Invasive Species

I took some photos of a dead Nutria on the road near the slough at Pot of Gold corner.  This is an invasive species from South America and can wreak havoc in ponds and agricultural fields.  (It’s a vegetarian.). The Provincial government asks that sightings be reported.  Nutria look like a very large and well fed rat with a face somewhat like a guinea pig and a long, very thick tail.
This is the provincial link for a description and info on how to report:

TSOP – The Thetis Society of the Perplexed.

As time goes by, I have become even more perplexed about the current rules of socializing.  To avoid any Complexity in Perplexity or Perplexity in Complexity, the Society’s constitutive meeting will take place in the spirit and tradition of revivals.  We will meet under the open skies, on the field behind the Thetis School, on Thursday, September 2nd, at 3 PM.  John Lennon would love it.  Just Imagine.  Please bring your own chairs or be prepared to stand.
Has anybody ever said that membership in the Society will be easy?  jcerny07@gmail.com

Mt. Hayes Update: And We are Still in EXTREME

Other than the cooler temperatures and a bit of dew overnight in some areas, we have not yet dropped from EXTREME Fire Hazard conditions.  All the local fire weather reporting stations are reflecting the data…and the forecast is for even more drying.  The Cowichan Valley is now in drought level 5.
Here is the latest news story on the Mt. Hayes fire.

'It's not over yet': Mount Hayes fire still being held, dry conditions expected next week

Dog and Animal Care Wanted

Looking for someone to look after my animals (3 dogs, bunch of sheep and chickens) while I am off island. You will need to be confident and experienced with high need dogs. They are more comfortable with women or a couple.
We could do an introduction to see if the combination works.
Very happy to pay for a good match and reliable help.
Just day trips to start with.
Thanks in advance!

October 1st Ferry Schedule

I didn't post the more compact, back-of-the-phone-book version of the new ferry schedule, as I didn't want it to confuse the issue, since the schedule isn't starting for another month.  But as there have been requests for it, here is the link:
https://www.thetisisland.net/ferry/ferry_schedule_1Oct2021.jpg
It is also now linked from the Ferry section of the homepage at

Ferry Schedule Change for October 1st, 2021

Click here to view Ferry Schedule

BC Ferries has been working on a schedule change for Route 20 for some time now. They reviewed their proposed changes with members of the FAC earlier this week.

This quote from BC Ferries with some background rationale:

"This amended schedule has been developed as a way to address the unsatisfactory on-time performance/reliability of the service on this route. This schedule is thought to provide a much better chance of seeing the ship on-time/close to on-time than has been happening over the past year or so. It provides in-port (loading/unloading) times that don’t exist in the current schedule, and many of these proposed departure times are much closer the ‘the actual times the ship has been leaving’ anyways. As per the discussion around the usual ‘school student’ sailing at 3:35 being moved to 3:50 pm, this indeed is one of the cases where the proposed time is fairly accurate to what is actually happening now, so we hope that’s considered if people are concerned about moving that school sailing later".

Some other details to note: there is still 10 round trips a day and 11 on Friday; the first departure from Thetis will be at 6 AM Saturday to Thursday and 5:45 AM on Friday; elimination of in transit meal breaks for the AM watch (Sat - Thu); a scheduled in port meal break for the AM watch (Sat - Thu); two in transit meal break crossings for the PM watch (Sat - Thu); 2 in transit meal break crossings for both the AM and PM watch on Fridays; tie up at Thetis at 11:25 PM (Sat -  Thu) and 11:45 PM (Fri).

The schedule will change Friday October 1st, 2021.
