Celebration of Life for Edith Hyatt

Edith Hyatt passed away last year during the very restrictive pandemic period when we were not able to gather together, nor did we have a venue then.

On August 5th, a Thursday, the day that would have been her 98th birthday, we will hold a memorial tea and remembrance for her at Forbes Hall in the afternoon.

Celine and I need to know ahead of time the approximate number of attendees so that we can plan which space to use and how many cups to set out for a light tea.

Please drop me a short note if you think you might be able to attend:  Jeannine.caldbeck@icloud.com

Thank you.

TIVFD: Haying at Capernwray

The Fire Department has been receiving queries/complaints about the haying during EXTREME hazard.

We have worked out a compromise that allows Capernwray to harvest the hay and at the same time lower the risk of wildfire to the community.

The TIVFD Tender and two fire fighters will be on standby at the field during raking and baling.  Capernwray has three qualified volunteer fire fighters on their staff.  If an emergency response is required elsewhere while the FFs and Tender are at the field, all farming activity will cease and the Tender and crew will immediately respond.  The mechanical baling etc.will  take place in the morning with a two hour fire watch posted afterwards.  Fire fighters will be paid an hourly standby wage by Capernwray.  With the grass short and hay removed, the field can then be used as a buffer and safe zone if required.

This field was identified in the 2020 Thetis Island Community Wildfire Risk Assessment report by the Province as a suitable area for wildland firefighters to stage during an emergency if conditions are right.  I have been in touch with the Coastal Wildfire Centre in Parksville and they approve of this compromise.

Wednesday evening Maple Bay had a structure fire that in turn caused spot fires from embers in the smoke, and a bush fire started heading towards a subdivision.  Six Cowichan Valley fire halls were called out as well as two Forestry helicopters.

We are well aware of the danger of sparks in dry grass and bush here and we are very pleased that community members are extra vigilant during this extreme fire hazard period.

Thank you.

Fire Chief J. Caldbeck

New Stop Line for Thetis Ferry

Recently BC Ferries painted a new white stop line at the top of the first hill up from the trestle. Additionally, they painted what looks like crosswalk hash marks where the old line used to be, and a dotted white line to delineate the ferry line from the traffic lane. All this was an effort to make it safer for the large groups of campers disembarking to Capernwray.

BC Ferries plans to put a new stop sign beside the new white stop line in the near future.
