Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at 7:27AM I sent this to our Coast Guard but afterthought, the Islands Trust might debate this!
Let me describe a weekend at anchor off Penelakut Island. The peace and tranquility is routinely destroyed by hi revving speed maniacs on water craft attempting repetitive impossible acrobats at noise levels exceeding 90 db; over horse-powered "layer cake" fiberglass behemoths generating tsunamis in order to get to the next A/C marina plug in; and Mach lll speeders sporting multiple 350 hp Yammis.
If not for the sake of fellow, albeit sane boaters, (yes, you guessed it, sailors) who do enjoy transiting our amazing coastline; what about all creatures great and small who are forced to flee, dive and swim because of this insanity.
As a lifelong global sailor I believe it a privilege to own a boat. Highways have rules and regulations.
Everyone but the fossil fuel market is a winner if you implement speed limits in Coastal waters.
Cheers

Sunday, July 4, 2021 at 2:16PM Some are confused about what EXTREME Fire weather Hazard means, how it is decided, and how it affects Thetis Island outdoor activities.
The BC Wildfire Service maintains many reporting weather stations in our area and we use the data mainly from the Salt Spring, Cedar and North Cowichan stations. A rating system of 1-5 is used, 1 being Nil, 2 Low, 3 Moderate danger,4 HIGH. and 5= EXTREME FIRE HAZARD.
Ratings are based on several factors such as fine fuel moisture content code, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, duff moisture content code, drought code, spread index etc. These data are collected daily and the hazard level is set.
When the rating reaches HIGH for three consecutive days, “early shift” for high risk activities is put in place. Activities can start at dawn but must be terminated before 1 p.m. and a mandatory fire watch for two hours must commence. High risk activities include but are not limited to chainsawing, milling, mowing, excavating, mechanical tilling, etc.
When the hazard rating goes to EXTREME that means that any sparks, open flame or smouldering fire can produce explosive fire behaviour that will run with great speed (an example is the recent Lytton fire). All high-risk activities are shut down. Campfires are not allowed. (Propane campfire appliances may be used as well as battery or electric weed whackers with plastic string are allowed. Electric chain saws may be used above waist height because there should be no danger of striking rocks and no sparks from hot exhaust are produced.)
When the hazard rating falls to HIGH again, after three consecutive days at HIGH, early shift activities may begin again. After three consecutive days at MODERATE, early shift regulations are cancelled.
Fire season is starting earlier each year and ending later, with HIGH and EXTREME conditions lasting for longer periods.
We all have to plan accordingly.

Sunday, July 4, 2021 at 2:14PM Issued: 1115 PDT Saturday July 3, 2021.
SYNOPSIS: (Today-tomorrow) Although a weak upper trough crossed the area last night, the only effect has been to help clear out some of the marine layer clouds that have plagued the Lower Mainland the last few days.
Radar imagery shows the remnants of the cloud band crossing the provincial divide with a few high level showers which apparently are not reaching the ground. Skies are sunny and temperatures are beginning to warm quite rapidly and likely climb a degree or two above Friday’s values—mid 20s to low 30s. A thermally induced trough will deepen over the BC interior today, centred over the Okanogan, and as the pressures fall,Coastal mainland river valleys should see increasing inflow winds. As the interior pressure rises again after dark, the winds will decrease. A few isolated showers form along the western edge of the thermal trough giving a chance of an isolated shower for eastern parts of the mainland zones. There is a risk of thunderstorms over the Coast Mountains as well. The forecast for Sunday looks remarkably the same and temperatures and winds will follow a similar pattern. Possibly the interior thermal trough deepens Sunday afternoon and backs up to lie along the east facing slopes of the Coast Mountains which brings a stronger inflow to the Coastal fire centre. Also, it is likely that increasing instability and moisture brings a higher chance of showers and thunderstorms to eastern sections of the mainland zones.
OUTLOOK: (Monday-Wednesday) Sunny warm weather continues through Monday and Tuesday but by late Tuesday current forecasts show a deeper offshore low diving southeast down the outer coast and setting up a moist unstable flow onto southern BC. This brings general cloud cover and a few showers and cooler temperatures for Wednesday along with a better chance of thunderstorm activity.

Sunday, July 4, 2021 at 2:11PM A big shout out to the adventurous boaters who did the full circuit on July 1st!
It was a first-time Sail Past treat to be visited by two orcas near Tent Island as we took a pit stop at sea.
Thanks to all you islanders waving from shore, especially those on the east side whose faithful presence always make the full tour worthwhile!
It was a great afternoon on the ocean celebrating our country and also reflecting on its flaws…as every country has them.
The flagship skiff flew an orange shirt along with a Canadian flag at half-mast in respect and recognition of the indigenous children we have wrongfully lost at residential schools.
May truth rein in this country. Grace and forgiveness be given and accepted. And may we bond together as one proud and equal nation.
Looking forward to seeing more boats at sea next year!

Sunday, July 4, 2021 at 2:10PM Dear Thetis Island Friends,
With the latest changes in BC’s Restart Plan and the loosening of many restrictions, we are excited to be hosting more guests in this season, including our week long Holiday Bible Weeks for families beginning Sunday, July 4.
We continue to remain closed to the public, including day guests and walk-on visitors.
We are happy to be planning a day in mid to late July to invite Thetis Islanders to come enjoy the property and we look forward to seeing many of you again!
Keep your eye out for further details on this.
Thank you!
