Swimming Lessons Needed ASAP

My 6-year-old daughter Athenia is extremely keen to learn to swim. She already spends hours in the ocean every day. Is there anyone willing to give her a few swimming lessons to advance her to a level where she is safer in the water. She is currently all bravado with no skill and is causing me some serious stress....

This would be a paid position

Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program – COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Program for the Thetis Island Wharf Rehabilitation Project Update

I am very disappointed to advise the Thetis Island community that the CVRD has been advised the grant application submitted to the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program – COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Program for the Thetis Island Wharf Rehabilitation Project ($270,000 grant funding request approved by the CVRD Board to submit) was not selected for funding under the program. According to the notification, the program received significantly more applications than could be funded and the decision to not fund the Thetis Island Wharf Rehabilitation was not a reflection on the importance of the project for the community, but rather the degree to which the program was oversubscribed with applications.
The Letter from Brian Bedford, Executive Director, Prov. of BC Local Government Infrastructure and Finance can be read at
https://cvrd.primegov.com/Portal/Meeting?compiledMeetingDocumentFileId=14929 under Correspondence C2.

At the 7 Jul Electoral Area Service Committee meeting I will bring forward a motion to recommend to the Board that a meeting be scheduled with the Thetis Island Port Commission to review options for the Thetis Island Wharf Refurbishment.

Thank you to all those that sent in letters of support for this very important project and for everyone's patience as we have all waited for the results of the grant application for the Thetis Island Wharf Rehabilitation.

Odour of Dead Creatures

Like many others on the island, we have been inundated over the past week by a strong odour of dead animals along our shoreline.  We initially searched for a dead deer or sea mammal but noticed that the odour was also evident at neighbour's properties on all sides of the island.

CBC confirmed that "more than a billion intertidal sea creatures" died in the record heat of last week! This huge environmental loss is the source of our current odour issue.

PSA from the People’s Apothecary Garden

What we’d originally thought to be Corsican mint (Mentha requienii) last fall has turned out to be a lookalike plant called pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium). Although pennyroyal has been used traditionally in medicine, modern studies have shown it to have possible toxic effects on the liver, and it should not be ingested. Topically it can be used as an effective insect repellent, however we are planning to remove it from the Apothecary Garden come September and replace it with another groundcover, to avoid any confusion between it and our other edible mint varieties. As the pennyroyal was originally harvested on the island, should you come across it be aware that it should not be eaten, despite its similarities to the usual tasty herb!

More on the differences between pennyroyal and Corsican mint can be found in our post on the ThINC Facebook page.
