Dead Deer

Recently at least 2 deer have been found dead on Thetis without any evidence of trauma.

It is likely these deer have died from infection with AHD (adenovirus hemorrhagic disease), which has been spreading on nearby islands and in the Cowichan valley as well as in the American gulf islands.

Anyone finding a deer under these circumstances is advised to not consume the meat from the animal and to wear gloves and mask while handling the carcass. Disposal is by deep burial without moving the carcass to another location.

More information may be found online by googling "AHD in deer in BC".

Hazard Rating Climbing

Wednesday we will have moved up to HIGH Hazard Rating.

This means that starting Thursday, early shift comes into effect.  All spark/flame/hot exhaust producing tools, including metal-bladed tools such as mowers or gas weed whackers etc. must cease work before 1 pm and a two-hour fire watch posted.

(Note that electric chainsaws operated above knee height where the chain won't strike rocks, electric splitters, and electric weed whackers with plastic string are exempt.)

Salt Spring is now in EXTREME.  The other local fire weather stations are sure to follow soon.

Please be extremely careful with your evening permitted campfires.  Time to dust off your propane campfire appliances.

Note Regarding July 1st Sailpast

A recent e-spokes notice of the sailpast on July 1 included plans for a "pitstop on Tent Island".

For anyone participating in the sail past and Tent Island pitstop, please consider that Tent Island is part of Penelakut's Reserve and that in August 2020 Penelakut notified the public through signs and newspaper that Tent Island is closed to the public "due to neglect and abuse."

This means if there is no explicit permission to be on Tent Island from Penelakut Tribe, it is trespass. Hopefully in the spirit of being responsible neighbours and citizens, any participating Thetis Islanders will respect and support Penelakut's decision and the ecological integrity of this tiny island by getting permission before making a pitstop on July 1 or any day. And if permission to access Tent Island is granted, we can assume it means responsible and respectful use - no garbage, no fires, and no bathrooming.

Please see the article published in the Chemainus Valley Courier last summer at this link: https://www.chemainusvalleycourier.ca/news/tent-island-closed-due-to-neglect-and-abuse-from-campers/

Change of Parade Date

The Thetis Island Parade date has been changed to AUGUST 1, Sunday. This will allow B.C. Day long weekend guests to participate and the road traffic for the ferry will be lighter.
