Monday, June 28, 2021 at 9:58AM One of many improvements at our expanded hall is the opportunity for increased planting.
TICA approached Emily McIvor, Thetis Island resident and garden designer, to come up with a drought tolerant, deer-resistant plan. Emily's proposal reflects her broad knowledge of plants and gardens and was well received by gardening enthusiasts involved with TICA.
The garden will enhance the ambiance of our community centre and serve to demonstrate a variety of plants that can be used in gardens on Thetis. A small Garden Committee has been formed to oversee the landscaping and maintenance of the grounds. There are many keen gardeners on Thetis and it is hoped that you will be interested in supporting the garden at the hall in various ways. A "Friends of the Garden" group could assist with planting, weeding, watering, deadheading, trimming, etc.
Please contact Don Sinclair at sinry@telus.net or 250-246-4291 if you are interested in participating.

Thursday, June 24, 2021 at 4:51PM The next five days are forecasted to be very hot.
Take care of your dogs by making sure they are kept in cool areas. They should not be able to lie in full sun – they do not know better! These areas could be inside your home in rooms with good ventilation, and little direct sun. Outside, these could be areas that are not in direct sun the whole time your dog is confined to that space. Make sure they have lots of fresh water, most dogs love ice, put a big chunk in their water bowl. Refill their bowls several times through the day.
Gentle exercising should be done early in the day, preferably before the temperature rises over 24 degrees. The earlier the better, your job as your dogs’ guardian is to keep them quiet and safe. Swimming is great but retreat from the sea into the shade once you’re done. Leash them if you need to, to keep them in the shade. Encourage water play so the water gets right to their skin, this will help keep them cooler far longer.
For double coated dogs who have been shaved (which they never should have been unless for a medical reason), you need to keep them cool, spritz them with water several times a day. Well-groomed double coated dogs do well in the heat, following the same rules as you would for any dogs. If your dog hasn’t had a good brush in a while get to it today – open hairs insulate, whereas matted hairs do not.
Their life is literally in your hands during high heat periods.

Thursday, June 24, 2021 at 3:45PM Another anonymous letter has been delivered and we wonder about its credibility. Is it really a group of concerned citizens or one disgruntled one who might not be able to build their planned breakwater?
We are, of course, talking of the proposed changes and upgrades to the Islands Trust Policy Statement and the fear mongering being raised by said citizen(s).
Please read the proposals here: https://islandstrust.bc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/TPC_2021-06-15_SM_AGD-PKG_FINAL.pdf
We find the changes and proposal to be quite reasonable and fit well with our vision of island life. We support our elected representatives in this regard.
Cheers and non-anonymously,

Thursday, June 24, 2021 at 3:44PM Keep your eyes peeled for more info in the coming days!
St.Margaret’s cemetery wishes to thank Norm Kasting and Glen Andison along with side kick Gurk Sarioglu for the ingenuity and muscle used to correct the tilting Helen Burchell Memorial stone at the cemetery.
It took several hours of careful excavating and lifting of the 5-foot high very heavy granite memorial to get it standing upright and level.
It is now standing straight and tall as it once did in the past.

Thursday, June 24, 2021 at 3:43PM Warnings
4:09 PM PDT Wednesday 23 June 2021
Heat Warning in effect for:
A dangerous long duration heat wave will affect B.C. beginning on Friday and lasting until Tuesday.
Threat: Daytime highs ranging from 29 to 37 degrees celsius combined with overnight lows of 18 to 20 degrees celsius. Humidex values during this period will reach the high 30's to possibly the low 40's.
Locations: Metro Vancouver - Central, Metro Vancouver SW, Metro Vancouver - North Shore, Greater Victoria, Howe Sound, Whistler, Sunshine Coast, Southern Gulf Islands, East Vancouver Island, Inland Vancouver Island.
Timespan: Friday to Tuesday.
Remarks: An exceptionally strong ridge of high pressure will develop over British Columbia likely resulting in record breaking temperatures. The duration of this heat wave is concerning as there is little relief at night with elevated overnight temperatures. This record-breaking heat event will increase the potential for heat-related illnesses.
Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place.
Check on older family, friends and neighbours. Make sure they are cool and drinking water
Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.
Watch for the symptoms of heat illness: dizziness/fainting; nausea/vomiting; rapid breathing and heartbeat; extreme thirst; decreased urination with unusually dark urine.
Outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks in a cool place.
To get more information:
- Check the local news for health and safety updates.
- Check HealthLinkBC online resources about heat-related illness and how to protect yourself at www.healthlinkbc.ca/healthlinkbc-files/heat-related-illness.
- Call HealthLinkBC at 8-1-1 to ask about heat-related illness.
Environment Canada and local Medical Health Officers expect an increase in health and safety risks from heat and are advising the public to take precautions.

Thursday, June 24, 2021 at 3:29PM The next veterinary visit to the island will be Wednesday, July 7th. Owing to the unofficially revised Chemainus/Preedy Harbour ferry schedule, we’ll be on the island for slightly reduced hours. We hope to leave Chemainus on the 8.55am ferry (ex 8.40) and return on the 3.20pm sailing (ex 2.40). The 5.20pm (ex 4.30) does not enable return to Salt Spring in good time.
For an appointment please phone 250 436 0045 or email erskine2814@outlook.com

Thursday, June 24, 2021 at 3:27PM Hello islanders,
For those planning to join in on the July 1st Sail Past… please be advised of a slight alteration to our pit stop route. It has been brought to my attention that Tent Island is not open to the public, so we’ll just skip that pit stop and keep on cruisin’! We can start a new tradition and make North Cove beach a new pit stop.
Eager to see some familiar faces and new islanders at sea on July 1st!
Tricia Hunter
