Looking for Angela

I am trying to contact a New Zealand friend of mine, Angela Atkins, and her partner Hudson.

Her last name may have changed but she has a friend who lives on Thetis. She used to live in Lake Cowichan but is now in Duncan.

Mike 250-210-8926

from the Editor

ALERT:

If you know Angela, please inform her of this post and let her know that Mike is trying to find her.

She can make the decision whether or not to be in touch.  You can pass along Mike's location and number to her, but do not give Mike her whereabouts.

Let's keep people safe.

Looking for a Tinker

The health equipment loaner program has a number of pieces of equipment that are in need of repair. I am looking for a tinker who will take items and do minor repairs (there is a small budget for parts). If you are interested, please reach out to me.

Trail Closure

A couple of trees have fallen on the Lawrence Valley Loop at the “Wind Bridge” which are impossible to pass through. There is also a dangerous hanging branch about 1/2 km from the entrance to the trail and the wardens for this trail have marked it with an upward-facing branch. The Lawrence Valley Loop will therefore be closed until the situations can be rectified.

St. Margaret’s Cemetery and Jollity Farm Families

St. Margaret’s Cemetery extends a BIG shout out of thanks to the Jollity Farm families who engaged in a work for trade project down at the cemetery. They hauled out a huge amount of debris that had accumulated after dead trees were limbed or taken down. In exchange for the labour, they took the logs to be used as firewood. Their willingness to engage with the cemetery in this way was a huge help.

Thank you, Noah, and all the families that pitched in.

Feeling the Heat ?

The library/hall will be open 10 to 1 and maybe later if it is as hot as it was Sunday.

Remember to drink lots and stay out of the sun during the peak of the heat. Try to keep your place cool. Block the sun by closing curtains or blinds. And if you feel unwell call 911.

Moving up to HIGH Fire Danger Class

The fire weather stations around us (Cedar, N. Cowichan, Saltspring) have moved up to Danger Rating 4-HIGH. We are moving up to HIGH as well. This means that starting on Wednesday “Early Shift” goes into effect for HIGH-RISK ACTIVITIES.

In the Wildfire Regulation, high risk activities mean each of the following:
(As per Wildfire Regulation consolidated April 2023.)
(a) mechanical brushing;
(b) disk trenching;
(c) preparation or use of explosives;
(d) using fire- or spark-producing tools, including cutting tools;
(e) using or preparing fireworks or pyrotechnics;
(f) grinding, including rail grinding;
(g) mechanical land clearing;
(h) clearing and maintaining rights of way, including grass mowing;
(i) any of the following activities carried out in a cutblock excluding a road, landing, roadside work area or log sort area in the cutblock:
(i) operating a power saw;
(ii) mechanical tree felling, woody debris piling or tree processing, including de-limbing;
(iii) welding;
(iv) portable wood chipping, milling, processing or manufacturing;
(v) skidding logs or log forwarding unless it is improbable that the skidding or forwarding will result in the equipment contacting rock;
(vi) yarding logs using cable systems;
(j) to (q) Repealed. [B.C. Reg. 213/2008, s. 1 (b).]

Starting on Wednesday morning, HIGH RISK activities must cease at 1pm and a two-hour fire watch posted. Note that electric mowers or weed eaters with metal blades can produce sparks when hitting rocks. And are therefore prohibited. Plastic string mowers are allowed. Electric chainsaws are allowed if cutting will be above waist height where there is no danger of the chain striking the ground. Gas saws and other gas equipment are prohibited.
