Sea Life Centre - Opening for Its Second Season this Saturday

Hello Thetis Islanders!
The Sea Life Centre (SLC) is back for its second season at Telegraph Harbour Marina!

Come say hello this Saturday, May 16 between 11am-3pm for our opening day, or 10am-3pm on Sunday.

For those who haven't visited before, the Sea Life Centre is a floating gazebo and marine discovery hub, run in collaboration between ThINC, Telegraph Harbour Marina, and the Ladysmith Maritime Society. Inside, you'll find our beloved Seaquarium and interactive touch-tank, freshly stocked for the season by the Thetis Island Marine Explorers (TIME) dive team with locally collected sea life - nudibranchs, gunnels, crabs, and other fascinating creatures from our very own waters.

ThINC staff and volunteers keep the centre running daily, carefully monitoring salinity, temperature, and feeding under the guidance of marine biologist, Andy Lamb.

Whether you're a longtime fan of the Seaquarium or visiting the Sea Life Centre for the first time, we'd love to see you there.

Questions? Reach out to our new summer employee, Maya, at maya@thetisislandnatureconservancy.org

See you there!

Poisonous Plant Warning

I have recently discovered a very toxic plant on our property and wanted to alert others to be on the lookout for Poisonous Hemlock. I first noticed it in one of my flower beds and thought it was an attractive fern-like plant but then became slightly concerned when it reminded me of a toxic plant I had seen on a bike trip. I checked several sources and included photos of my 1 metre plant and discovered it was Poison Hemlock. If you find this plant on your property, please be aware of how to safely get rid of it.

Here is some information from HealthLinkBC:

The hemlock plant, scientifically known as Conium maculatum, is a poisonous herb from the Apiaceae plant family. All parts of the plant, including the seeds, roots, stems, leaves and fruit are poisonous. Hemlock typically emerges in spring and looks similar to plants like wild carrot, wild parsnip or wild parsley. This can lead people to accidentally ingest it, with potentially fatal consequences.

Do not touch the plant with bare skin. Wear protective gear such as rubber gloves, goggles or a face shield, a protective suit, boots and a respirator (such as N95 or KN95)

Carefully dig down to remove the plant, including its roots. Do not cut, mow or burn the plant to avoid spreading seeds or releasing toxic fumes

Do not place poison hemlock in your backyard composter. Bag the plants carefully and place them in the regular trash

Campfire Info: Ban Rescinded on Friday

Campfires permitted across Coastal Fire Centre due to decreased fire risk.

PARKSVILLE – Effective on Friday, May 15, 2026, at 12 p.m. (noon), the Category 1 campfire prohibition will be rescinded throughout the Coastal Fire Centre. Category 2 and Category 3 open burning will remain prohibited.

The Category 1 campfire prohibition was initially implemented due to a combination of elevated wildfire risk factors, including:
Prolonged hot and dry conditions;
Rising fire weather indices;
Elevated incidence of human-caused wildfires; and
Early season operational capacity.

Current and forecast conditions have since shifted, bringing cooler temperatures, improved humidity values and an overall reduction in wildfire hazard throughout the Coastal Fire Centre. Because of this, Category 1 campfires will be once again permitted under the Coastal Fire Centre jurisdiction.

IF YOU HELD A Thetis Island MAY CAMPFIRE PERMIT EARLIER IN THE MONTH YOUR PERMIT WILL BE REINSTATED TO MAY 31st and you do not need to reapply until June.

All other open fires are still prohibited.

Missing Two Straw Hats

This past week has brought to mind the joke:
‘I don’t know if I’ve found a rope or lost a horse!’

I have somehow managed to lose 2 matching straw hats sometime in the last week or so.

They are short brimmed, one with a grey band, one with a black band. They have sentimental value and our family would be very grateful to have them back.

Thank you,
