Child’s Life Jacket Missing

Our PFD Loaner Program “Kids Don’t Float” has been a great success this summer at the Community Dock. However, one of the loaner kid’s PFDs was missing today and we are hoping somebody’s child accidentally wore it home. If you have it, please return it to the community dock or drop it off at the front door of the fire hall. We are very happy your child used it to stay safe around the shoreline, and another child will use it before the weather turns and we close down the loaner program until next summer.

Coastal Fire Weather Forecast

Thetis Island remains at EXTREME for the next few days.

Weather Forecast
SYNOPSIS:

A cold front brings rain and gusty winds to Haida Gwaii. Precipitation gradually spreads down the coast, with light showers near Bella Bella this afternoon. SE winds over the Mid Coast will increase this afternoon with light inflows over the remainder of the Fire Centre. An upper ridge remains over the Fire Centre's southern zones, and no thunderstorms are expected, except perhaps some wet lightning in Haida Gwaii. Maximum temperatures will be about 4C above average inland in the southern zones and Mid-Island. It will be dry in the eastern sections of Fraser and Pemberton zones, with the potential for crossovers in the eastern Fraser zone. Tonight, the cold front creeps to the SE, with precipitation reaching North Island and northwest Mid Coast by dawn. Winds will be light and RH recoveries will be good.

The cold front will then continue down the coast, bringing rain to the Mid Coast and North Island, but the rest of the Fire Centre stays mainly dry and seasonably warm as the upper ridge remains over the south. Wind will be generally light and morning low clouds and spotty drizzle over much of the south on Friday could restrict flying.

OUTLOOK:

Saturday to Monday

Models show the front stalling north-south across the North Island Saturday as the supporting upper trough stretches out. Precipitation should edge into Mid Island by the afternoon. South Island and the Sunshine to Fraser zones will be dry and partly cloudy with seasonal temperatures.

For Sunday, the latest US models show the front remaining intact and coming through Mid/South Island and the southern Mainland with some rainfall. The feature is much weaker in the Canadian models, which leads to uncertainty regarding expected precipitation amounts over the South Island and southern mainland zones on Sunday.

Possible Injury to Cat: 6:30 am Thursday

Hi community,

I feel awful writing this but a cat ran out right in front of my car on North Cove road just before Forbes (traveling south) at around 6:30 this morning. There was absolutely nothing I could do about it. It ran under my car and I felt a slight impact. The cat must have continued across the road into the lower Burchell hill area because I didn’t see in my rear view. It shocked me. I didn’t stop right away because I was picking up Chad but came back around 2 minutes later, no sign of it. Both Chad and I have leg/foot injuries and I didn’t have the right shoes to go off the road and into the forest to look.

It was so fast and I didn’t get a good look at the cat. It was mid sized and dark in colour but not black, maybe a dark grey tortoise shell/medium length fur. I feel terrible, and it’s hard to share this publicly but I know if it was my fur baby I would hope someone would speak up.

With sadness,

Last Bake Sale Plus Market

This Saturday, Sept. 13 will be the last BAKE SALE PLUS MARKET for the season. Come on down to Dunfield Park behind the Thetis Island Marina/Pub, store and post office between 10 and 2.

There will be, of course, pies, cookies, banana fritters, Nanaimo bars, cheese cake, egg rolls, Filipino based meals, sourdough bread, caramel corn, fresh fruit and vegetables. Native cedar art carvings, hot sauce, lotions and more.

Even though it is the last market of the season, think ahead;

Do you have company coming for a weekend, Thanksgiving, Christmas, get together of any sort? Are you anticipating being busy one week and might not be able to keep up the cooking and baking? Last minute gifts for any occasion (carvings, hot sauces or lotions, etc.)?

Visit the market, ask the vendor for their contact info. Perhaps you can arrange things with them and you won't have to go several months without some of your favourite goodies or gifts.

Most of all, the Bake Sale Plus Market vendors would enjoy a chit chat since they may not see you till next season.
