Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at 12:27PM Hi Dear Neighbors,
I am currently participating in the People’s Arts contest, and I would love to have your support. More than just a contest, this is an important platform to help my project, designed to transform clinical atmosphere of hospitals into spaces of calm, and serenity
How to vote: It’s quick and free. Simply click here: https://peoplesartist.org/2026/marcia-aftimus
By voting, you aren't just supporting me; you are helping to make hospital environments more human and welcoming. If you could vote and share this with someone who values art and well-being, I would be incredibly grateful!
With love and gratitude,
Marcia Aftimus
Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at 12:06PM A campfire ban is set to take effect across much of coastal B.C. later this week as dry conditions continue to elevate wildfire risk.
The BC Wildfire Service says open fire prohibitions will come into force Thursday at noon within the Coastal Fire Centre, which includes Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and the Lower Mainland.
The ban will apply to all categories of open burning, including campfires, backyard burning and industrial fires, with more specifics coming within the next one to two days, the fire centre said.
On Thetis Island, all solid fuel campfires (wood, briquettes etc.) will be banned and campfire permits cancelled. Propane campfire appliances will not be included in the ban at this time. This is the earliest the province has put a campfire ban in place in our region.

Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at 12:05PM The TIVFD Kids Don’t Float loaner lifejacket installation was vandalized recently.
Our member went to the Community Dock to hang the life jackets and found that two of the three decorative hooks had been torn off, and the third one was broken (guess they couldn’t rip that one entirely off).
So, we will be a little delayed in getting the lifejackets available for beach and dock safety.
If you have any information on who or why the vandalism was done, please contact the fire department.

Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at 11:46AM Date: May 7, 7:00pm (Pacific Standard Time).
Zoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81233431103
For those who cannot make it, the talk will be recorded and will - after May 7, 2026 - be found on the Ladysmith & District Historical Society's website:

Overview:
Thomas Russell's Beautifully written diary reads like an adventure novel with near shipwreck, horrendous accidents and injuries, bush medicine, interactions with the Haida First Nation, whites and Asians, character sketches of scurrilous and honorable individuals, shoddy and dishonest work by previous company employees, a complex and thin coal deposit, a disgruntled workforce, and delay pick-up at the end of their contract (caused by the coal company having gone bust), which led to food shortages prompting perilous lengthy dugout canoe journeys in search of victuals. (Goodbody, Take 5; May 2026 Vol. 29. No 11)

Ruth Goodbody
Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at 11:46AM Ollas are porous clay irrigation vessels. When buried in the ground and filled with water, ollas slowly release moisture to surrounding plants-- right in the root zone. Ollas can reduce water use by 70% as compared to surface watering and they save you time in the garden!
The use of ollas can be traced back to ancient civilizations, such as the Aztecs and Romans, where they served as vital tools for water conservation and transportation.
Local Ollas are handmade on Mayne Island. They are 32 cm tall and capable of holding approximately 8.5 litres of water. They are designed to water a 1.2 meter square (4 feet by 4 feet) raised garden bed.
If you are also seeking to reduce or eliminate plastic in your garden these are a great option.
I am in communication with the local producers, Mayne Island Clayworks, and can facilitate the transport of Thetis Island orders (within capacity of my car!) if they are received by Sunday, May 9th. More details and contact info can be found at their website: www.mayneclay.ca

Monday, May 4, 2026 at 7:57AM The fire hazard moved up to HIGH according to the four closest fire weather stations around us. As of Tuesday, May 5th, High Hazard Activities will be restricted to the morning hours and must cease before 1 pm. A two-hour fire watch must be posted following the work stoppage.
Although there is a lot of “green” around, the winds are drying us out significantly and the humidity is low during the day. The fine fuel on the forest floor has dried out.
Evening campfires with a permit are not affected, but please be aware that sparks, embers and wind are a dangerous mix and make sure you have water, tools and a responsible person to extinguish your campfire thoroughly.

Monday, May 4, 2026 at 7:56AM On Saturday, May 9th from 10am -3pm, St. Margaret’s Cemetery Committee will be having its annual maintenance day. The cemetery is a vault of island history and is the permanent home for many of our forebears. From tidying up headstones, to general landscaping there will be a range of projects to suit everyone's interests and abilities. We welcome all Islanders.
Please plan to join us, we encourage everyone to participate. If possible, please bring small garden tools for general landscaping and/or scrub brushes and water pails to clean grave markers. We would encourage you to contribute to the picnic lunch, where we will remember and celebrate the lives that came before us.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
