From Your ESS Team

Although local government has and continues to undertake emergency preparedness measures, it is

critical that individuals and families prepare to look after their own needs for a minimum of seven days.

To help you do this, Cowichan Valley Emergency Management published an Emergency Preparedness

Workbook available online at

https://www.cvrd.ca/DocumentCenter/View/84184/MIECM-Emergency-Preparedness-Workbook---2017?bidId=

Copies are also available from your LERN captain.

A segment titled “26 Weeks to Emergency Preparedness” in particular, will help you plan and actualize

your family's preparations.

Once a week for the next 26 weeks we will send the weekly recommendations to E-spokes. Please

consider implementing them as soon as and as best you can.

Week 1

Identify safe places in your home and on your property. Practice earthquake 'drop, cover, and hold” and

all the possible ways of getting out of your house. Thetis Island has challenging terrain. Give thought to

how you might have to evacuate if usual routes are cut off. Talk to your LERN captain about alternate

egress points. (see pages 36 & 42 in the Workbook. Earthquake and fire issues.)

Please refer to the Emergency Preparedness Workbook for much more information, especially page 2

regarding Grab and Go kits and ICE entries on your cell phone for your emergency contacts.

Remember that the Thetis Island Phone Book ( pages 3 through 7) are a ready and thorough aid to

Emergency Planning.

A Virtual Day to Remember

Join us in Remembering those who served our country in an online virtual Remembrance Day event!

I am writing today on behalf of a learning group of students in the Bachelors of Recreation Management program at Langara College. Our learning group is currently putting together a virtual Remembrance Day event as part of a project for a Special Events and Festival Management course in our program.

‘A Virtual Day to Remember’ will include guest speakers, interviews with veterans, film/picture displays and a moment of silence, and will be live-streamed via Youtube on November 11 at 10:45am, and run for a duration of approximately 20mins. We have also created a Facebook page where participants can comment and interact with our learning group AND be entered in a draw for a number of prizes from business sponsorships we have procured in the community.

Please join us in viewing “A Virtual Day to Remember”

Medical Emergency Dock Response

Last week the CVRD Parks and Recreation Department installed steel bollards on the Community Dock to block vehicular traffic on the trestle due to their safety concerns.  The TIVFD Rescue vehicle must now block both lanes of Foster Point Road at the trestle-head in order to keep the vehicle flat when off-loading a patient.

Please understand that for the safety of our responders, our patients and our community drivers we will be stopping traffic in both lanes until offloading is completed.  This may take some time, as the responding paramedics will reassess the patient in the back of the Rescue and not on the trestle before loading into the water taxi.

Our local TIPC Directors (Patrick Mooney and Andy Lamb) are representing our many concerns to the CVRD and we are hoping this is a temporary issue. In the meantime the TIVFD asks for your patience and understanding if you are unfortunately delayed by our new medical response procedure.
