Follow Up to Fraser Point Boat Theft

Thanks to a few people that provided timely information, our stolen boat was found by Ladysmith RCMP beached at the head of Ladysmith Harbour where it was starting to be stripped.  

The boat has been recovered and is now at a boatyard to awaiting the RCMP identification team and to start the long process of putting it all back in order.  The RCMP have a witness who has had contact with the thieves and for all islanders’ sake, we hope the RCMP have success in apprehending the thieves so we can all sleep a little easier.

COVID in Our Region

With the recent uptick in positive cases of Covid-19  in our Regional District and news items describing cases in our close neighbouring communities, this is a good time to remind each other to keep up our health safety practices to lower the risk of contagion.  

Do you have hand sanitizer in your pocket?   

Are you always wearing a mask when coming within 6’ (2 metres) of someone?  

Do you immediately wash your hands with warm water and soap when you take off your mask?  

Are you keeping your “bubble” small?   

The Firehall still has free hand sanitizer to refill your personal containers.  It’s on the “front porch” of the fire hall and always available.

Boat Theft from Fraser Point

A 2005 Glacier Bay 2690 boat with twin Yamaha 150 outboards was stolen from the dock at Fraser Point over the past weekend.  

The boat is a 26ft white power catamaran with a fiberglass hull, tan canvas over the aft deck and registration number BC 245336.  We believe the boat was towed away from the dock overnight as the boat cabin was locked there were no keys onboard.   

If anyone sees the boat or has any related information, please report it immediately to Ladysmith RCMP and/or contact me at gporter5375@gmail.com or 604 616 5375.   It is sad to think that such a crime can occur on Thetis Island and we would greatly appreciate receiving any information that anyone may have.

New SPU Support Team

Your Fire Department is constantly seeking committed volunteers to train as frontline fire fighters to replace our valued members who retire or move away.  If you are unable to join the department as an active member, would you be willing to join a support team that could be called upon occasionally during a larger scale emergency to augment the department’s efficiency and effectiveness?

We will be seeking Auxiliary volunteers in the spring to take a one day training course, instructed by the Office of the Fire Commissioner, to learn to deploy Structure Protection sprinklers to safeguard important infrastructure (the dock, the school, the Telus trailer etc.) and residential buildings well ahead of a wildfire front.  This support team will NOT be engaged in fire fighting.  

Through grant funding and donation the TIVFD has acquired 5 structural protection kits and pumps to make up an SPU (Structural Protection Unit) and a pickup truck for transport.  The OFC has agreed to train support volunteers on Thetis Island in its deployment - skills normally only taught to active structural fire fighters for deployment throughout BC during wildfire season.  We are a pilot project. We know that help from Vancouver Island will be very delayed even if available.

Aside from a willingness to commit to the one Saturday in the spring for training, we would ask you to be willing  to respond to a request for assistance if you were available.  We prioritize safety, and all auxiliary members are covered by WorkSafeBC when tasked by the fire commander.   

Please consider applying to become a member of this new SPU TEAM.  Other TIVFD support teams currently operational are the Water Transport Aux Team, the Rest & Rehab Aux Team, and the Emergency Scene Traffic Control Aux Team.  Rarely utilized but always ready, our Auxiliary Teams play a vital role in the safety of our community when needed.  Please contact the Fire Chief or Trustee Graeme Shelford for more information or with an expression of interest in the SPU Team or any of the others.

The Thetis Island Local Trust Committee will hold an electronic Community Information Meeting and Public Hearing regarding Thetis Island Development Permit Area No. 1: Riparian Areas (Ralston Creek).  More information about proposed Bylaw Nos. 108 (OCP) & 109 (LUB) and the proposed Development Permit Area can be found on the RAPR project page and in the Development Permit Area No. 1 Guide.

Fairy Slipper Trail Interpretive Panels

ThINC is pleased to let you know that three interpretive panels have been installed in the kiosk at the Fairyslipper Forest Nature Reserve trailhead parking area.

The beautiful panels and artwork were designed by Elisabeth Bond with content developed in consultation with ThINC and the Islands Trust Conservancy. A grant from the McLean Foundation funded the panel design and printing. The kiosk and panel frames were constructed by volunteers Geoff Porter, Ron Vandergaag, Rob Welsh and Wayne Loiselle out of locally milled lumber donated by Geoff Porter. Gary Geddes donated the roofing.

Next on the agenda to be installed in the coming months are trail direction signs made and donated by Geoff Porter. ThINC thanks you all for your wonderful community contribution! Questions and comments about the trail or the Nature Reserve can be directed either to ThINC or the Islands Trust Conservancy.
