Lucy’s Birthday

Tomorrow, October 1, is Lucy Hayward’s 90th birthday. This well known and loved senior on Thetis has blessed us with her cheerful presence for decades.  For many she has been an example of how to age gracefully while living each day with joy and confidence. She has no desire to leave Thetis anytime soon.....where else could she swim in the ocean almost daily for 4 months of the year?

Wouldn’t she be amazed to find 90 cards or notes with good wishes and appreciation filling her mailbox (she doesn’t do email).

Let’s go for it!

Ron Hyatt

Ron Hyatt, long time resident of Thetis Island and just shy of his 99th birthday, died peacefully in Cowichan District Hospital late Tuesday afternoon.  His son Geoffrey from Haida Gwaii and niece Jeannine were at his side.

A small private family interment in St. Margaret’s Cemetery will take place In the coming days.  The family wishes to thank the TIVFD first responders for their care when evacuating Ron off the island for his last boat trip.

Forbes Hall Vote Results / Thank You

On Saturday a vote was held by the TICA membership to make the important decision to allow borrowing to fund the completion of the Forbes Hall Expansion.

There were 131 ballots cast, and a rds majority (67%) for approval was needed for the motion to pass, therefore there would need to be at least 88 members approving the motion.

Final count was 104 - Yes, and 27 - No; this meant that 79% approved the motion, and the motion passed.

Thank you to all of those who came out on Saturday to make this important decision.

Thank you to all of those volunteers who set up and took down all the equipment, to those who managed all the voting protocols, and those who were on hand at the meeting making sure all participants were registered, and were on hand to answer the many questions.

It was a long day of voting, and the patience and kindness of everyone was appreciated.

Thank you

TICA Board

Open Burning Starts October 1st

Open Burning on Thetis Island will commence on October 1st, Thursday, with permits.  Please apply for a permit online at www.thetisislandfire.ca

“Never burn garbage or construction debris. It is illegal, and it releases toxic chemicals in the air. Effects of these toxins include cancer, lowered immunity, disorders of the nervous system, and interfere with childhood development. Reduce waste and recycle instead.

Campfires and beach fires can release a significant amount of smoke and fine particulates into the air. Burning salt covered wood in beach fires releases dioxins and furans, which are very toxic. “ (Ministry of Environment)

Thetis Island lies within a High Sensitivity Zone for smoke control and open burning other than campfires will depend on the Ventilation Index for the South Island on the day of your burn. Use the interactive map for a daily update on the Venting Index found on http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/epd/epdpa/venting/

Regulations for size of campfires:  no greater than  0.5 metres in height and 0.5 metres in width.

Regulations for hand piled yard waste burn piles : no greater than 2 metres in height and 3 metres in width.

Have tools and water sufficient for thorough  extinguishment at the site.

All fires must be supervised (not left unattended) by an adult until extinguished.

Authorized burn barrels also require an inspection and a permit and cannot be used to burn garbage, construction debris, plastics etc.

On November 1st , TIVFD Burn Permits will no longer be required through the winter months to April 1st, but outdoor smoke regulations will require you to burn yard waste only when the Venting Index permits.

If at all possible, please limit your smoke by chipping garden debris, composting leaves, or other means of disposal.  The fine particulate matter and toxins  in smoke that we create outdoors can adversely affect our neighbours’ health.  Outdoor burns are not nearly as efficient as modern wood stoves in reducing smoke pollution and therefore are more regulated.

Needed: No Time to Say Goodbye

Does anyone on Thetis have a copy of "No Time to Say Goodbye" by Sylvia Olsen with Rita Morris and Ann Sam that you could lend to Thetis Island El School?
If so can you drop it off at the front door of the school or I could also come and pick it up.

Remember to Get Your Flu Shot!

A big thank you to TIVFD for arranging the flu clinic again this year. With the COVID19 on most people's minds right now, I would like to tell you how important it is to get your flu shot this fall (Tuesday Oct 27th). I apologise to those who may be tired of hearing about my near death experience with H1N1 in 2009 but for those that don't remember or for those new on the island I am going to tell you how important it is to get your flu shot.

It was near the end of October 2009 that I thought I just had either the flu or food poisoning and just tried to ignore it. The day I decided to seek medical help was the morning I was lying on the bedroom floor with most of my body functions spent. I decided to check my temperature, which I rarely ever do. My temperature read 104F so we went to the emergency in Chemainus.  That is all I remember until I woke up in December 2009. I have always been fairly healthy and was the last person who thought I would get that sick my organs were starting to shut down as pneumonia went septic. They put me into a drug-induced coma to give my body a chance to recover which in the end took 7 weeks. I was in 4 different hospitals ending up at the Royal Jubilee in Victoria since they had the only Kidney Dialysis Machine. I was told that if I had not been healthy at the time I would be dead.

My health has never been the same but I am alive and glad I had not only a great team of doctors and nurses, but a community that was there for us.

Getting the flu can be more than a few days under the weather but add the COVID 19 and you may not return home. Scary? Yes, but let me tell you so is death. Please for not only your health but for those on this island that are immune compromised get your flu shot!!!
