A Virtual Day to Remember

Join us in Remembering those who served our country in an online virtual Remembrance Day event!

I am writing today on behalf of a learning group of students in the Bachelors of Recreation Management program at Langara College. Our learning group is currently putting together a virtual Remembrance Day event as part of a project for a Special Events and Festival Management course in our program.

‘A Virtual Day to Remember’ will include guest speakers, interviews with veterans, film/picture displays and a moment of silence, and will be live-streamed via Youtube on November 11 at 10:45am, and run for a duration of approximately 20mins. We have also created a Facebook page where participants can comment and interact with our learning group AND be entered in a draw for a number of prizes from business sponsorships we have procured in the community.

Please join us in viewing “A Virtual Day to Remember”

Medical Emergency Dock Response

Last week the CVRD Parks and Recreation Department installed steel bollards on the Community Dock to block vehicular traffic on the trestle due to their safety concerns.  The TIVFD Rescue vehicle must now block both lanes of Foster Point Road at the trestle-head in order to keep the vehicle flat when off-loading a patient.

Please understand that for the safety of our responders, our patients and our community drivers we will be stopping traffic in both lanes until offloading is completed.  This may take some time, as the responding paramedics will reassess the patient in the back of the Rescue and not on the trestle before loading into the water taxi.

Our local TIPC Directors (Patrick Mooney and Andy Lamb) are representing our many concerns to the CVRD and we are hoping this is a temporary issue. In the meantime the TIVFD asks for your patience and understanding if you are unfortunately delayed by our new medical response procedure.

Remembrance Day Service - Cancelled this Year

Following direction from the Canadian Legion as well as the Provincial and Federal governments, the Thetis Island VFD will not be holding our flag lowering remembrance service on November 11th this year.

Instead, we join with the Legion in asking you to pause and remember at home:

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we remember all of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and honour all of the Canadian men and women who currently serve our country.”

Let us remember together, apart.

Forbes Hall Expansion Update: Construction ~ November 2, 2020

Thetis Island Community Association

Over the past month, there has been much activity in the hall as the membership’s approval to borrow has allowed for the project to move forward to completion!  In October all of the electrical and mechanical installations were completed to the point that an incredible volunteer group was able to get going on insulating the building.

With the electrical and mechanical inspections completed (until the final), the installation of insulation, vapour barrier- and drywall can be completed. Doors and large feature windows are in place, and once the final large entry doors have arrived and are installed the final application of siding will be finished.

The drywall contractor found a great deal on sheetrock, saving the project about 15% on materials.  The day it was being delivered, there were ten workers on-site, as well as the six-member Project Management Team.  Their meeting was held in the Library, where they were able to physically distance amongst the piles of sheetrock, while work went on in the rest of the building. The new skylights brought lots of light into the room making it a great place to meet. Soon there will be ancillary heating, and as the days get cooler it will be a huge improvement to have a heated space to meet in, and for the workers, too!

The response to volunteer callouts has been enormously supportive.  People have been showing up to work, not easy work, for long, steady hours.  During the mechanical and electrical installations equipment and materials lay throughout the building, and the cleaners somehow still managed to get the construction area swept and organized for the next day.  The work these volunteers are doing for their community is very much appreciated and knowing that so many people have actively engaged in this project, speaks volumes about Thetis Islanders.

Please consider joining the ever-expanding group of people who are bringing this project to completion.  Some of the volunteer jobs are behind the scenes and only require a commitment of several hours a week.  Whether turning up to pitch in and help with construction volunteering or offering some expertise or willingness to the various committees, your time and contribution will be welcomed!  Please contact Greg Gall at gnpgall@gmail.com if you’re interested in helping in construction, or Teresa Moore at teresamoore386@gmail.com for participation within a committee.

Thank you to Michel, Chad, Liam, Mike, and Mark, your community appreciates the great work you are doing to get this project not only completed but with excellence!

St.Margaret's Cemetery: Thank You

Many thanks to the crew who came out and helped construct the split rail fences at St.Margaret’s Cemetery. Beautiful job done under the direction of Tom Anderson.

It is wonderful to see so many of these restoration and development projects come to completion thanks to the generosity and skills of the many volunteers who have helped over the last five years.

The cemetery is looking well cared for and remains a special space for our community
