Lawrence Valley Loop Trail

We held a small work party Thursday to put down breeze blocks in the wettest sections on the trail.

Please note that you will need boots for the lowest section at this time and common sense dictates that you take care on the boardwalk portions when it is wet or frosty.

And thank you to Ron Bannister for providing the blocks and to Bill Dickie for transporting them to where they were needed.

We still need more blocks and if you have some to donate, we would be grateful.

Kudos and a Shout Out to First Responders

Shouting out a huge thank you to the men and women of the first responder crew who took such amazing care of me on New Year's Eve.

Your professional and effective care allowed me to arrive at hospital in the best condition possible, under the circumstances. My family and I sincerely appreciate your kindness and commitment, giving up your own time on that special evening.

Many thanks,

Donna Cottell

Flannel Sheets Wanted

Dear Islanders,

Like most of you I have been closely following the news coming out of Australia, and wondering what I can do to help.

I have joined ARCCG...Animal Rescue Collective Crafters Guild and bought fabric yesterday - good sale on at Fabricland - to start sewing many of the items suggested on their site.  I will be making Joey pouches and three D slings which all  requires three liners  but could use used flannel sheets for liners if anyone wishes to donate to the cause.

Thanks,

Cecilia

Philosophers' Cafe - TUESDAY, January 14, 2020 - Heneage House - The Portal

Dear Friends:

This is an invitation to an exciting and informative session of our Thetis Island discussion group at the Philosophers’ Café on Tuesday, January 14, 7-9 p.m. at Heneage House, The Portal, when Martine J. Reid, author, curator, independent scholar and Honourary Chair of the Bill Reid Foundation, will join us to share her thoughts about and impressions of North West Coast art and the role it has played, and continues to play, in Indigenous culture. She has worked closely for several decades with BC’s coastal First Nations and, as wife of the late Bill Reid, one of our most cherished and gifted artists, often found herself at the center of Indigenous creativity. Martine and her husband Rodney Badger are also beloved Thetis residents.

Blanket and Towel Found

I was walking my dog on Jan 3 along the Capernwray beach and found a sopping wet towel and blanket marked “Our home and native land" on the ground possibly from the polar bear swim. I brought the articles home, washed them and are ready to pick up.

Update and Clarification regarding TICA Extraordinary General Meeting

At the membership meeting on December 8th, 2019 it was reported that 124 votes were cast, 75 in favour of the motion to borrow funds to complete the Hall expansion, 49 opposed.  However, the number of Members registered to vote had been tabulated as 122. Based on this and other voting irregularities, we declared and reported the vote to be invalid.

After questions and concerns about that outcome were raised by some Members, registration records were reviewed and it was determined that 124 was the correct number of eligible voters at that meeting. We apologize for reporting the erroneous tabulation.

As part of our review we found at least two factors that contributed to errors.  A confusing membership list was used to register members, which made both the registration and tallying Members in attendance more difficult.  Also, an insufficient number of ballots had been prepared which necessitated ballots to be torn in half, or even quartered.

A working group is being set up to review and improve registration procedures, and the organization of future meetings to ensure these mistakes cannot occur again.  Any Member interested in contributing to this review is most welcome.  Current steps in place to resolve these issues include; more registration tables with all eligible voters being listed individually (not as couples, as many have different last names), a sufficient number of printed ballots and more stringent monitoring of how and when ballots can be cast.

Again, we apologize for these mistakes.

On behalf of the TICA Board of Directors

Ron Bannister,

President, TICA

West Coast Seeds Fundraiser

Thetis Island gardeners - Would you like to support our school just by purchasing your seeds for this year?

Thetis Elementary in partnership with Jollity Farm is now taking orders for West Coast Seeds!  The fundraising products can be found online at https://fundraising.westcoastseeds.com

Please note, the fundraising product catalogue is different from the regular catalogue!  Once at the fundraising site, you can view the items and place your orders right online!  When placing your order, just make sure to select Thetis Island Parents Association from the organization list.

If you need any help, have questions, or would like to view a paper copy of the catalogue please contact any family attending Thetis Elementary or email tipaorders@gmail.com.  This fundraiser will run for the month of January only, so please get your orders in soon!  All funds raised will go directly to support the learning and activities of our own Thetis school students!

When you have selected your items and proceed to the check out, leave the address information for billing and shipping as the Thetis Island Parents Association.  Once the order has been placed, print or make note of your order number, this is how their system will track each individual order.  All the orders will be shipped together at the end of January and will be available for pick up at Jollity farm when they arrive.  Payment will be accepted at that time.

Thanks again for supporting your local Elementary school!
