Recycle Overtaking Your Storage?

I write on behalf of the Solid Waste Team.

It has been almost 2 months since we stopped accepting recycle items and some of you may be wondering what the future holds....when will we be back to operating as we were at the end of February? The answer is not easy...we may be a long time. There are safety concerns for community members, volunteers and employees in the way the recycle system is designed. There are threats of a second or third wave until a vaccine is approved. Will there be a market for recycled items as the world journeys into the new normal?

Knowing that no one has an indefinite amount of storage space, and an ability to have it remain clean during storage.....I thought I would update you on what I learned venturing to Bing's Creek: it was super easy.

On an essential supply run to Duncan, we stopped at Bing's, a total of 15 minutes from entry of their driveway to exit.

Most of that time was spent understanding where items were to go....and then the time it took for me to whine as we were there on a rainy day!

Here are my helpful hints to make it very easy to sort before you go! There are basically 5 sections in which to sort your standard items:

Plastic film: Grocery bags and overwrap (Type 1)

Plastic other: Zip-locks and tough bags (Type 2)

Containers: Plastic containers (clear, solid and milky, etc.), tins, tetra (milk, soup etc.)

Paper and Cardboard together

Glass jars and non-refundable bottles (lids off - they go separately)

I had no Styrofoam or aluminum.....but I am sure they were there!

Think about managing your own recycle and perhaps lend a helping hand to your neighbour. Try and transport it to Bing's or other CVRD sites. Saving it for a Thetis reopening is not recommended. Also, placing recyclables in garbage is not the way we roll, and will soon strangle our garbage volumes....so please don't!!

The TIRRA Solid Waste Team is aware of the fact you have all paid fees for recycle in your parcel tax, and we will be making adjustments for future budgets and taxation to reflect our inability to provide this service at this time.

Thank you for your understanding and your care for our solid waste handling and our environment.

Community Farm Project - We Need Your newspapers!

If you didn't already know, then we'd like to share info about the wonderful project that is in its second year at Jollity. Presenting the Allotment Farm Co-op Project! A group of approx. 10 hard-working islanders are working cooperatively to grow their own food on a farm plot. While we often just work side by side, there are times when bigger projects need all hands on field, shovel and fork. We will be working together on a new plot, spring seeded with cover crop, to create a No-Dig garden for squash & potatoes.

We are collecting as much newspaper as possible in time for Wednesday, May 20. If you have newspaper to contribute, we will leave totes in the lower trail parking lot, plus by the egg box along the Jollity driveway. We appreciate your contributions!

BC Community Bat Program Press Release

BC bats not to blame for COVID-19; in fact, Bats need OUR help.

BC Annual Bat Count contributes to surveillance for white-nose syndrome across the province

For Immediate Release

May 11 2020

Thetis Island, BC

The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a negative spotlight on bats, due to concerns over BC bats carrying the virus. This association is a myth - bats in BC do not have or spread the SARS-CoV-2 virus responsible for COVID-19. Misinformation such as this can lead to unfounded fear and persecution of bats.

In reality, bats are an essential part of our ecology, consuming many insect pests each night. Bats in BC suffer from many threats, and almost half of our 15 species are ‘at-risk’. One of the more familiar species, the Little Brown Myotis, is now listed as Endangered in Canada.

A simple way to support bats including the Little Brown Myotis is to participate in the BC Annual Bat Count this June. The BC Community Bat Program is requesting colony reports and volunteer assistance for this citizen-science initiative that encourages residents to count bats at local roost sites.

Bat counts are easy, fun, and safe, not to mention vital for monitoring bat populations. “The counts are a wonderful way for people to get outside, respect social distancing guidelines, and be involved in collecting important scientific information” says biologist Mandy Kellner, coordinator of the BC Community Bat Program. Volunteers wait outside a known roost site, such as a bat-box, barn, or attic, and count bats as they fly out at twilight. Ideally, 1 - 2 counts are done between June 1 and 21 before pups are born, and 1 - 2 more between July 11 and August 5 when pups are flying.

In 2019, the Annual Bat Count collected baseline data on bat populations at 337 sites across the province, and hopes to monitor these sites and more for 2020. The count data helps bat biologists understand bat distribution and normal variation in colony sizes before our bats face impacts from a devastating bat disease called White-nose Syndrome.

White-nose syndrome is an introduced fungal disease, fatal for bats but not for other animals or humans. Not yet identified in BC, the disease continues to spread in Washington State, less than 200 km from our border.  Results from the Bat Count may help prioritize areas in BC for research into treatment options and recovery actions.

“We know relatively little about bats in BC, including basic information on population numbers” continues Kellner. “This information is more valuable than ever, particularly if it is collected annually. If people want to get involved but don’t have a roost site on their property, we will try to match them with a roost site nearby.” The Annual Bat Counts offer a safe way to learn about bats and share knowledge, while contributing to bat conservation efforts.

Funded by the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, the Forest Enhancement Society of BC, and the Habitat Stewardship Program and your local funders, and with support of the BC Conservation Foundation and the Province of BC, the BC Community Bat Program provides information for people dealing with bat issues on their property or who have questions about how to attract bats. To find out more about bat counts or white-nose syndrome, to report a dead bat, or to get assistance dealing with bat issues, visit www.bcbats.ca  and call your Thetis Island Community Bat Program Coordinator – Rob Welsh 250-246-1547 or rmwelsh@telus.net
