Friends of Furries Update

Yes, we’re still out there.  We are a part of your community controlling pet and feral animal population.

Over the last 5 months, we’ve spayed/neutered 6 cats and vaccinated 2 cats.

This has depleted our funds.

As we rely solely on donations, we will not be able to continue our mission, unless additional funding comes our way.

We can be reached at FriendsofFurries@gmail.com

RECYCLE YARD CHANGE

Operations at the recycle yard are temporarily changing, effective immediately.

We plan to keep the garbage portion available, at least until the bins are full.

Please be especially careful to keep recyclables out of the garbage as we have limited space.

We won't be receiving cash, but will rely on the card system and will keep an I.O.U  system also.

We are not receiving any recycling or free store items so please save these items for the time being.

We are also considering reducing the hours of operation during this time.

Thanks for understanding.

Corrected Forbes Hall Expansion Update - March 18, 2020

Our sincere apologies for the errors in the original posting, the corrected version follows:

In a recent Notice to members of Thetis Island Community Association, termination was announced of the construction contract with J Lealand Contracting Ltd. This construction contract was for the expansion of Forbes Hall.

On Friday, March 13th community members Karl Unger, John Gordon, and Ernie Hunter presented a construction proposal to the Forbes Hall Expansion Committee and the TICA executive.

On Sunday March 15th, Ron Bannister, and some Expansion Committee members, held further discussions regarding the construction proposal that included those mentioned above, and also Peter de Hoog and Michel Poirier.

Unfortunately, a public meeting to share information about the construction project scheduled for Sunday, March 15th, was postponed due to the Corona virus.

It was the intention of TICA Directors to seek approval from the TICA membership, on March 28th, to engage with a new general contractor. The directors intended to ask members to approve a motion to proceed with a single selection (sole source) process. In an effort to contain costs and minimize delay, the Directors and Expansion Committee do not recommend engaging in another competitive selection tender process.

It now appears that the March 28th TICA membership meeting will be cancelled because of the COVID-19 health crisis and the Provincial Government's decision to prohibit gatherings of over 50 people.

TICA is exploring different ways that the membership can vote on this motion without holding a meeting. TICA currently has 336 voting members.

Directors are also considering whether to make the decision to go to sole source without a membership vote. Legal advice is being sought is being sought on this option.

New Virus Hotline in BC

The province has announced that there will be a new active phone number for British Columbians to call for information on COVID-19.

Amid the current outbreak of coronavirus, huge call volumes into the current provincial health information line available at 8-1-1 are causing massive delays and phone wait times.

This has sparked the province to announce on Monday morning a new number dedicated specifically for COVID-19 concerns.

As of March 16, people can call 1-888-COVID-19 or text 604-630-0300 for details, advice, and further information on the virus.

PLEASE -- help with - White Nose Syndrome (WNS) - surveillance.

Bats are beginning to show up and even return to summer roost sites.

In the past week there have been reports of bat activity from Vancouver Island and various Gulf Islands, the lower Mainland, Thompson, and Okanagan regions.

The BC Community Bat Program needs Thetis Islanders to: record and report when bats first return to roost sites.

Monitor frequently for any dead bats near their roost and report any carcasses to Rob Welsh your BC Bat Community Program Coordinator  (do not touch dead or live bats with bare hands; dead bats can be picked up in a plastic bag and then frozen)

WNS in Washington was confirmed at one site when a private landowner noticed bats returning early to their roost, and then noticed bats dying.

Wanted  “Dead or Alive” any Bats or Bat activity –

Please call or email Rob

Thetis Island Volunteer Fire Department Update

The TIVFD is remaining fully operational at this time and we are following government and health authority guidelines during this pandemic.

We are taking extra precautions to ensure a lower risk of virus spread to the responders themselves and the community at large.  We continue to respond to medical assist calls and fire incidents.

TIVFD members just returning from trips away are now self-isolating for two weeks and will not be responding to call-outs.

We have cancelled the monthly Blood Pressure Clinic.

Notice of Upcoming TICA Extraordinary General Meeting

Notice of Upcoming TICA Extraordinary General Meeting

It has come to our attention that some members' emails either did not arrive, or got put into their junk-mail. The notice was sent out Saturday, March 14th, two weeks prior to the upcoming meeting.

To be sure that the Notice of Meeting gets out to as many members as possible, we are sending out a second notice.

Also, due to the measures being taken to reduce the spread of COVID-19, TICA will be creating a vote format that will not involve a heavy concentration of members in an enclosed space.  More information will follow next week regarding place, and format.
