Congratulations!

Thank you all for making this strange year’s Flu Shot Clinic a huge success.  We had over 160 vaccinations in the 3.5 hours and other than the first half hour of chaos because the ferry was late getting the nurses to the island, the flow smoothed out after that.  Thank you for your patience, patients!  The nurses all were most appreciative  of your thanks to them individually.  They told me they love to come here because everyone is so friendly and welcoming.  They made sure we were first on the list for flu clinics and had ordered the vaccine for us in early September so we were assured of enough. 

For those of you who did not get to our local clinic today, make sure you call your doctor or pharmacist ahead of your trip to the Big Island to confirm they can accommodate you.

And baskets of virtual roses to Merry Gooding, Nan Beals, Veronica Shelford and Claire Hess for the coffee service the Auxiliary provided.  Regulations for food service during Covid disallowed their usual fruit and baked goods but their creativity gave everyone chocolate covered cookies and other treats your mum would have normally frowned upon.

The TIVFD is grateful that you value our local annual flu shot clinic and the health of the community by attending.  Your donations to the Community Fund support this initiative.

Bat Week – go to bat for bats!

As Halloween approaches and bat decorations appear, bat enthusiasts around BC are celebrating and supporting our real bats by participating in International Bat Week (October 24-31). Bat Week is all about appreciating these amazing animals and their benefits, from eating insects to pollinating the agave plant used to make tequila.  

Take a moment to learn about the many ways bats contribute to our lives, and what you can do locally for bats, at www.batweek.org or through the BC Community Bat Program at www.bcbats.ca. Research bats online, host an educational event, help restore a wetland, learn about bat-friendly lighting, prepare your bat box for next spring… there are many ways to participate and support bats. 

“Bats in BC help control agricultural and forest pests, as well as mosquitoes in our yards - but now bats need our help” says Mandy Kellner, Coordinator for the BC Community Bat Program. “The conservation of bats in BC has always been important, since over half the species in this province are considered at risk. With the continuing spread of White-nose Syndrome in Washington State, bat conservation is more important than ever as we expect to see impacts in BC in the near future. ” 

BatWeek is also the time to say ‘so long’ to bats in our neighbourhoods, until the return of insects with the warmer weather in spring. As insect-eaters, our BC bats must leave their summer roost sites and migrate or hibernate to survive the winter. This absence means that this is the time of year to do home renovations that you have delayed due to bat presence. You can clean out and repair a bat box, or do bat-friendly exclusion work, without disturbing or injuring bats.      

If you do see a bat in winter, please report it. Monitoring for White-nose Syndrome in BC will continue this winter, with Community Bat Programs requesting reports of dead bats or sightings of winter bat activity starting just after BatWeek, on November 1. 

In partnership with the BC Ministry of Environment, and funded by the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, Forest Enhancement Society of BC, and the Habitat Stewardship Program, the BC Community Bat Program provides information about bats in buildings, conducts site visits to advise landowners on managing bats in buildings, coordinates the Annual Bat Count, and offers educational programs on bats.

Flu Shot Reminder

Hello Islanders,

The Flu Shot Clinic is on Tuesday at the Firehall on Mission Road.  The entrance is through the furthest bay door from the road so park on the street and walk down the cement apron to the pop-up tents.

You have your time slots if you preregistered at fluclinic@thetisislandfire.ca.  It will be busy. 

At the pop-up tent shelter you will be asked if you have a fever, feel ill, have tested positive or haven’t finished your isolation period after travel.  We are bound by VIHA to ask these questions .  We will have a hand sanitizer for you to use before you enter.  You can wear your own mask that you use on the ferry and you must wear it when getting the shot,  if you haven’t got one, you can get one from us before you enter.  We will give you a number and call it out for your turn.

After your vaccination you are required to stick around for 15 minutes before driving home.  Being Thetis, we are slightly different than other in-town flu clinics in that we want you to have as pleasant a time as possible after getting your jab.  The TIVFD Auxiliary, with the support of the Community Fund, will offer you coffee and a commercially wrapped goodie, and you can sit at a table in the large bay (socially distanced) or have it in your car while you wait out the 15 minutes.  You must exit out of the big bay side door.  There will be signs.

We will also have a table set up where you can fill your own hand sanitizer bottles to take home.  The TIVFD managed to obtain a five gallon pail donated by the Metchosin Fire Department for our use.

This sounds complicated, but it’s much like going grocery shopping these days.  You just need a little extra time and patience, and you are saving a trip to town and hassles finding a pharmacy that can serve you. 

Bring a jacket, because the open doors will make it cool while waiting.

People's Apothecary Garden Walkthrough Today (Thursday)

Good day Thetis Islanders, 

Join the ThINCpod today at the People's Apothecary Garden on lot 62 (Carolyn Askew's) between 1-3pm, to learn more about this community space! 

The People's Apothecary is a medicinal plant garden and is a part of the Thetis Island Food Cooperative.  It was pitched to the ThINCpod in June as a 'side' project, but grew into something much more. Thetis Island community members played an integral part in the garden by supporting us with many resources (i.e. plants, seeds, rocks, compost, newspaper/cardboard, ash, cement, wood, a gate, machinery, tools, and expertise).  A big thank you to all who contributed! This is just the start, and we look forward to sharing our vision of future possibilities with you!

Please bring a mask (just in case), and don't forget your mug as we will be serving hot apple cider!
