Power Outage and Earthquake Preparedness

BC Hydro has planned an island-wide power outage for regular maintenance of THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18 from 9 am to 3pm.

Coincidentally, October 18th is BC ShakeOut Day, where the entire province can practise earthquake preparedness with a simulated earthquake at 10:18 am (tune in for rumbling noise on local radio stations.)

The CVRD Emergency Alert Notification System will also be tested that morning.  Many of you already signed up for that at last week’s Soups-On.  If you missed the great bowl of soup and CVRD Sybille Sanderson’s sign-up table, you can sign up on line by going to the CVRD website and search for Emergency Alert Registration.

Since we know the power will be out anyway, what a great time to get ready and be prepared for “the big one”.  How will you fare during an extended disaster?

Memories of Beth Bolster Tea

On Friday October 26, 2018 from 2 PM to 4 PM an informal gathering will be held at the Library at Forbes Hall for those wishing to share memories of Beth Bolster.

Tea will be served. You are invited to bake something to bring along to share. Perhaps one of the many amazing recipes that Beth gifted her friends and neighbours with over the years?

Please bring your favourite memories and stories of Beth as well. If anyone has photos of interest please do bring them along. Hopefully we will hear stories which will span the forty plus years Beth spent on her beloved Thetis Island.

To those of you who enjoy writing, it would be wonderful to have copies of your stories (and Photos) so that they can be put together and sent to Ken and his family in Washington as a reminder of Thetis love.

Contact us.

Since you asked...

The tower being added to the fire Hall is called a hose tower.  Traditionally all fire halls had one for hanging hoses to dry after use so they wouldn’t rot.  Then came electric hose dryers if departments could afford them (turns out they don’t last long and are expensive) and rubber hose that doesn’t need drying (but has a separate set of problems). On Thetis we have traditionally draped wet hose over top of the vehicles for several days to dry, which can be a problem when we want to move out quickly.  The hose tower will allow us to drain and dry hose properly and comes with the added bonus of being a training tower for ladder drills and rescue skills.

Thanks for asking.
