Back to School Reminder, Chemainus – Thetis - Penelakut

BC Ferries is reminding customers that students across British Columbia are returning to school this week. As a result, the Chemainus – Thetis –  Penelakut route will experience increased ridership as students commute to school via the ferry. 

BC Ferries is requesting assistance from the public to ensure we can safely accommodate all passengers on school days. In order to ensure adequate space for physical distancing onboard, we are requesting that all vehicle passengers remain in their cars for the duration of the morning sailing Monday – Friday at the following times:

· 7:45 am Mon – Thurs & 7:25 am Fri from Penelakut

· 8:05 am Mon – Thurs & 7:45 am Fri from Thetis

By remaining in your vehicle, this will create space for students travelling as foot passengers who will require access to the lounge and deck areas in order to maintain physical distance.

BC Ferries’ priority is the health and safety of our customers and employees, and the company strictly adheres to provincial and federal guidelines. The company is following the directives and guidance provided by the Province of B.C. and Transport Canada. Customers are reminded that wearing a face covering is mandatory while onboard and at the terminal.

100 Year Celebration of Thetis Island Elementary School

As many community members know, this is the beginning of an extra special school year. It is 100 years since the first school on Thetis was opened in Sept 1920 in a rustic building on the shore of Telegraph Harbour! Many changes have ensued but one thing that remains the same after a century is a shared sense that our one room schoolhouse is a vital part of our community.

The parents association (past and alumni) have just launched an online celebration of our 100 years as a school-centered community. At this time, due to the pandemic, our celebration is in the form of a public facebook group. Everyone who feels connected with the school (past or present) is welcome to participate in sharing reflections, memories, photos, etc. We hope to eventually create a memory book from what is shared. Wednesday Night Fire Call

Five members of the TIVFD were out after 9:30 pm, in the dark, trying to track down the source of heavy smoke in the vicinity of Forbes Road and North Cove Road.  An hour later the smell was dissipating.  We spoke with several residents of the area and they said it had happened before.  

We are in EXTREME fire hazard.  All outdoor burning is prohibited, including campfires and incinerators.  Although not prohibited, burning garbage and paper indoors in your wood stove at this time of year is not advised...sparks and embers emanating from your chimney could start a fire.  And your neighbours are not happy about the stinky smoke.

Good News-Plan Ahead

The TIVFD will once again be sponsoring the Flu Shot Clinic this year towards the end of October, beginning of November. No date is yet set, but you are definitely going to be able to get the 2020 Flu vaccine on Thetis, instead travelling off island. 

Because of new pandemic procedures, VIHA nurses have asked the fire dept. to set things up differently this year. It won’t be the same as other years, but it will work out. 

Children from 2 yrs to 17 can also get the flu mist.
