SYNOPSIS: 

(Thursday-Friday) As the upper low settles in over Vancouver Island today further bands of clouds and showers are expected especially for the Fraser zone but there is considerable variability in the pattern, notably east Vancouver Island which will see a mix of clouds/sun and little or no showers. Tonight, and tomorrow a heavier band of cloud rotates over the Island bringing more showers or periods of steady rain and then the pattern reaches the southern mainland zones later Friday afternoon. Northern sections are out of the wet pattern and will see sunshine and reasonably warm temperatures today and tomorrow.

OUTLOOK: 

(Saturday-Monday) The upper low opens up into a broad trough on Saturday with the heaviest clouds and rains moving away into the interior of the province. Coastal zones emerge into a mix of sun and clouds—and it might be the first dry weekend in the last two months! Sunday, with a weak ridge overhead, expect another sunny day and warmer temperatures. It does not last very long however as by Monday afternoon another low moves in with a return to clouds and showers.

Please check out ThINCpod, our summer podcast series where we meet with members of the Thetis Island community, exploring diverse topics around food systems and sustainability. 

Episode 1: Digging Deeper with Ian Ralston

For our first community excursion we toured through Meadow Valley with Ian Ralston, starting with a sound walk to tune into the landscape around us. The sounds of the creaking trees as the wind swept through, the chorus of birds, footsteps over fallen branches. After admiring the terrestrial world, Ian took us on a journey down under, where we uncovered all the dirty details on soil! While we examined a cutbank, we sifted through the different substrates; various combinations of clay, sand, and loam. We admired this world that teems with life: full of decomposers, intricate tree roots, fungal networks, and various life forms that are unseen by us, but are fundamental to food production. Without soil the earth would be a barren rock. Healthy soil is key when it comes to increasing food security.

The jams and jellies will be $5.00 each with an honour system in place. The stand will be open 7 days a week 9-4pm or until I run out.

Where Are You?

It’s the season for your summer friends and relatives visiting or borrowing your place while you take a break from home.   

Please make sure that they know the actual “civic” lot number that’s in the Thetis phone book, and use that number.  

There are many “lot 10, parcel 4” properties on the folio map for Land Title purposes, but the civic lot number is what 911 and your fire department deal with when a call comes in for emergency aid.  

And if you don’t have your civic lot number posted at the start of your driveway, visible from both directions, as required of all property owners by By-Law, please realize that valuable time will be wasted in trying to find you when you need help.  

Live on a driveway that forks to other addresses?  Please post your lot number and an arrow also at the fork to help us out.  Visitors telling 911 “its the blue cabin” doesn’t help in a forested area with other driveways.
