2019 BC Parks Student Ranger Program

·        The 2019 Student Ranger Program Objectives

·        Requirements for the 2019 Season

·        2019 Student Ranger Crews

·        Student Ranger Regional Projects

·        Link to Job Posting

·        Additional Resources

BC Parks within the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy has created the 2018-2019 BC Parks Student Ranger Program to promote outdoor youth employment opportunities across the province. Students studying and/or interested in pursuing future studies or employment in a related field are encouraged to apply.

Applications are now being accepted for student ranger crew member and student ranger crew lead positions. The competitions close on February 24, 2019.

For the 2019 season, 12 crews of four student rangers will work in regions throughout the province, including Prince George, Fort St. John, Terrace, Bella Coola, Williams Lake, Manning Park, Cranbrook, Kamloops, Victoria (Goldstream Provincial Park), Black Creek (Miracle Beach Provincial Park), North Vancouver (Mount Seymour Provincial Park) and Sechelt (Porpoise Bay Provincial Park). Crew lead positions begin May 13 and crew members begin May 26, wrapping on August 30.

The Student Ranger Program has been made possible by funding from the BC Parks Licence Plate Program and a 50% wage-match from the Federal Government's Summer Work Experience - Green Jobs in Green Spaces Work Experience Program. BC Parks would further like to recognize the contributions of its partners Project Learning Tree Canada and Canadian Parks Council.

Soup's On ~ Wednesday, January 30

Forbes Hall

11:30 AM - 1:00 PM $5.00

The Menu:

US Senate Bean Soup

(This soup is on the menu in the Senate's restaurant every day. On September 14, 1943, rationing due to World War II left the Senate kitchen without enough navy beans to serve the soup. Its absence was loudly reported in a speech on the Senate floor.  Somehow by the next day more beans were found and bowls of bean soup have been ladled up without interruption ever since! It is not sure if the Republicans or the Democrats complained!)

Cornbread

Baked Goods

Pot of Gold Coffee, Tea, Hot Chocolate, Hot Apple Drink

Lots of laughter and conversations

The Bridge Group invites you to join them in the Library at 1:00 PM

Looking for Gus: Lost & Hopefully Found?

This is an odd request, but sometime last spring I rehomed my two male cats with Jollity Farm.

They informed me that while one stuck around, the other ran away. I am wondering if anyone has been feeding, or has adopted a black fluffy cat with an overbite from around that time?

It would put my heart at rest to know that he's happy somewhere.

Thanks, Sara Holmes

Forage Fish Habitat Monitoring on Thetis Island

Forage fish, including Pacific sand lance and surf smelt, are an integral part of the marine ecosystem because of their role in energy transfer through the food web. The Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Research Institute (MABRRI), from Vancouver Island University (VIU), is surveying beaches to identify forage fish spawning habitat along the Vancouver Island and Gulf Island coastlines.

MABRRI is interested in engaging with Thetis Island residents, demonstrating how to sample for forage fish embryos and discuss the importance of this exercise. This demonstration could lead to Thetis Island residents making an impact on future forage fish populations, as data collection can lead to policy modifications.

If you are interested in participating in an on-the-beach information session, please contact either Vicki Walker (250-246-9126) or Ann Eriksson (ThINC@thetisisland.net). A date and time will be announce in the near future.

If you have any general questions about the project, please contact MABRRI's Project Coordinator, Haley Tomlin (haley.tomlin@viu.ca).
