Friends of Furries Update

Friends of Furries has been able to assist with the neutering of several male cats this spring, including a couple of very aggressive tom cats that were attacking other cats in their home yards.

We would like to encourage everyone to have their dogs and cats neutered or spayed for the health of both the intact animal as well as other neighbourhood pets. Neutering males decreases aggressive behaviour and wandering, while spaying females eliminates kittens and puppies.

If you need assistance with your pet, Friends of Furries has confidential funds available to assist with veterinary costs and we may be able to assist with logistical support getting your animal to or from a vet for spay/neuter.

Please contact Carol at seaspray@telus.net or Rhonda at davincii@telus.net if we can be of assistance.

Love Nature? Volunteer at the Nature House

Do you love nature? ThINC invites you to volunteer at the Nature House this summer and share your passions with like-minded Islanders and visitors.

With financial assistance from the United Nations Green Spaces program and a generous donation from the Stewart Fund of the Vancouver Foundation we've hired Caitlyn Skelton, a third year biology student at UVic and Thetis Island's own Kaz Bannister to offer programming for five days a week during July and August.

We'd like to be able to draw on a group of dedicated and enthusiastic regular volunteers to help out in the Nature House in the afternoons when the staff are busy with programs.

Sign up for an afternoon a week, or share a volunteer day with someone else and come every other week. Whatever you can manage will be more than appreciated. We have a lot of fun and are learning new things every day.

We've organized a volunteer orientation and safety briefing with the Fire Department at the Nature House for the afternoon of Thursday June 28.

For more information, or to join the Nature House family as a volunteer, please phone Vicki Walker at 250-246-9126.

Many thanks from the ThINC board

Movie Night ~ Thank You

Wow, what a fantastic turn out for the Thetis Memories Movie Night on Saturday!  A reassuring display that we do indeed need to expand Forbes Hall! My sole mission in creating the slideshow of memories was to inspire community spirit.  Receiving any donations would have just been an added bonus. Thanks to your outpouring of support and generosity, $1,617 was raised!  Thanks to our matching funds donor, every dollar you gave was doubled, bringing the total to $3,234. Your reactions to the slideshow, your laughter, tears and cheers just filled my heart with joy and made all the hours creating the show totally worth it!

Many thanks to Gloria Taylor and Helen Bird for running the popcorn and beverages and Ellen Rush, Lynn Hunter and Rebecca Andison for helping with set up.  Also, thanks to Ann Dickie for creating the Movie Night posters and getting the word out on the web.

It was so encouraging to see the Hall overflowing with compassion and community spirit!  This island is truly one of a kind and the dream of expanding Forbes Hall is growing ever closer to reality.

For those of you who missed the Movie Night or anyone who may wish to see it again, mark your calendars. The next viewing will take place on August 11th at Forbes Hall following the Family Fun Day.  Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.

Heartfelt thanks to all who came out and made this such a successful event in more ways than one!

If you’ve been to a Sportnic years ago, or the Family Fun Day, been in a parade, or the fire department, work bees at the hall, the Soirees, Easter Egg Hunts at Overbury, gone to our little school, Hallowe’en at the hall, Robbie Burns nights, Christmas concerts..… to name a few, there just may be a picture of YOU in it! You don’t want to miss it!

The amazing spirit ofthis community shines through! You will leave being glad you’re a part of it all and pumped to help make the next phase of our hall a reality!
