Welcome Package for New Islanders

As part of the new "Welcome to Thetis Island" package being developed we wonder if there are any businesses out there who would like to offer a small gift certificate to be included in the package. This can be a great way to introduce new folks to your services. Please contact me if you are interested or have any questions.

Sincerely,

Roadside Grasses

Grant Gordon, our great roadways works manager on Thetis, called the TIVFD to say the mower isn't coming back to mow the road edges before we get a lot of rain.

With the fire risk from tossed cigarette butts, hot exhaust when parking on tall grass, and sparks, we are asking that if you have the time and the ability please weed whack or mow your road frontage edge.  This will help lower the fire risk.

Some of our property owners already do that as a safety courtesy to our many walkers, and thank you for that.

·        Make and Use a Plankton Net: 1-4 PM

Did you know there are millions of tiny creatures living in the waters just off the beaches of Thetis Island? These creatures—plankton—are important food sources for each other, as well as other marine life! Many marine biologists have specialized plankton nets that are capable of removing these critters from the water, but often cost upwards of $500. We will be showing you how to construct your own and you will be able to use it to view the plankton species from the beaches using our microscope!

As with all of our programs, each is by donation to ThINC, or free if you’ve purchased a membership. Friends of the Nature House summer memberships are still available ($25/individual, $50/family)! If you have any questions regarding the Nature House programming, or would like to get involved, contact Danny at danny@cowichanlandtrust.ca.

Motorized Wheelchairs on Public Roads

The question was raised as to what side of the road motorized wheelchairs, or other medical motorized vehicles should drive on, and whether the drivers are required to wear helmets.  The answer is that they should follow the same rules as pedestrians, driving close to the curb on the left, facing the traffic. Helmets are not specified. Further details can be found at:

Propane campfire appliances with CSA approved labels will continue to be allowed during this ban.

This prohibition will remain in effect on Thetis Island until October 31st or until further notification.
