Campfire & Fireworks Prohibition

Please note the Province-wide Information Bulletin posted at http://www.thetisislandfire.ca/public%20service%20announcements/2017FLNR0131-001263.pdf .

The Coastal Fire Centre currently has a Category 2 open fire prohibition. With the Canada Day long weekend coming up we know that there are some who would like to set off fireworks but they are prohibited within the Coastal Fire Centres jurisdiction. If you would like to enjoy a fireworks display please go to a public event put on by a local town, city, or regional district. Local government has the resources to carry out these events safely.

We wish everyone a safe and happy Canada Day

Bats & Rabies

Cats, Dogs, Bats and Rabies

Our cat decided to kill a small bat the other day. Here is some very important information and guidelines, regarding what to do, if you experience a similar event.

*This information comes straight from the "Horses Mouth":

1. Call your Vet, Vet hospital, or, BC Centre for Disease Control

2. With a pair of gloves, place the dead bat in a secure container

3. If possible, take the bat container to the nearest Vet. They will send it for testing immediately

4. If you can not get off Island right away, place the container in your freezer until the day you can go. In udder words the victim, "is on ice", until you can get it to the Vet.

5. If you have more than one pet, you must ensure they have up-to-date rabies vaccines.

6. Depending on test results, your pets may need a booster shot.

7. Thoroughly clean all pet water, food dishes, especially, if, like our dog and cat, they share drinking water and lick each other.

8. Stay clear of injured and or bats displaying "unusual" behavior

9. "Rabies is a potentially life threatening disease to humans and pets"

10. If you find a dead bat, ask your Vet or the Vet hospital what to do

*Note: There is no cost for the bat rabies testing. This information was provided by our animals’ veterinarian in Chemainus, and VA or Vet by the CDC.

We hope this information helps,

Steve & Myla (PH# 250-246-2099)
