Bike Safety Program Completed

Thetis Elementary School children concluded their bike safety learning unit with a very successful bike safety 'parade' on June 21st - escorted by flashing lights of the Thetis Island Volunteer Fire Department and the RCMP.

On behalf of the entire school community, thank you to RCMP Constable Junior, TIVFD Captain Dave and all the Auxiliary TIVFD members on traffic control and who ensured our young riders where safe on our roads.

We thank all community members for their watchful eyes and safe driving practices as some of our youngsters continue with bike riding to and from school and into summer.

Campfire Permits Extended

If you are in possession of a TIVFD Campfire permit that expires on June 30th we are automatically extending it to July 5th.  We will be assessing the fire weather forecast and campfire permits after July 5th will be for shorter periods.  The fire weather experts are forecasting a hotter, drier summer than last year.

Also of interest to those who enjoy campfires:  Costco Nanaimo has the CSA approved propane campfire appliances in the store now for $99.99. They will give you years of service and can be enjoyed during complete campfire bans as they produce no smoke or sparks, just campfire-real flames and heat. This price is the best we have seen, and they may not be there all summer.

End of School Year ~ Celebration & Invitation

Our community is warmly invited to the annual Celebration of Success and Strawberry Tea co-hosted by Thetis Island Parents Association and TICA Cafe on Wednesday, June 28th from 12:45- 2:30 at Forbes Hall. The program will include recognition of student achievements, acknowledgements of community contributions to the school, a short movie of the 2016-17 year in review, a mini piano recital by students of Lynn Hunter, and of course refreshments and delicious strawberry shortcakes by the one-and-only TICA cafe. The school program will take approximately one hour, followed by the tasty treats.

Cost for the treats is $5 per person with all proceeds going to TICA in support of our hall and facilities. Thank you for celebrating another successful year with our school community!

Updated Busy Ferry Schedule

Please note that the Busy Ferry Schedule http://thetisisland.net/ferry/current-combined-busy.pdf has just been updated with additional traffic going to and from Pioneer Pacific Camp over the course of the summer.  Many thanks to all the organizations and groups who take the trouble to let us know about these extra numbers - the ferry traffic is problematic enough during the summer, so it really helps to know at least a little of what is happening in advance.

Saturday Fair

Exciting times at the Saturday Fair!

Two new vendors this year. Pat English has her popular kid's clothing line, and Bronwyn Fraser will be selling her own Vegan Baked goods.

Bird and Taylor Mercantile are selling an eclectic mix of antique and well loved jewellery this year.

Our other artisan's have added some new items this year and of course Marylyn and her famous pies and curry puffs are always in demand.

Check out both markets!

safeTALK Suicide Awareness Workshop

If there is enough interest, the Vancouver Island Crisis Line will bring the safeTALK three-hour seminar to Thetis Island later this summer, sponsored by the TIVFD.

This workshop will give you some comfort and confidence in addressing any concerns you have with friends, family members, co-workers and acquaintances.

It is the wish of the Vancouver Island Crisis Line that our community can become suicide-safer and a place where we are all able to watch out for each other with compassionate concern.

Please drop a note of interest to chief11@telus.net or phone me at 250-252-0544.
