Volunteers
The Recycling Yard seeks innovative, cheerful and hardworking friends ( that would be volunteers) for a 2-3 hour play date (every week? every month?). Activities include sorting games, visiting with other friends and neighbours and warm feelings of accomplishment. Sometimes snacks and music are provided; singing not mandatory. Interested? Why not sign up your pal too? Contact Vicki Walker (250-246-9126) for more interesting details.
Baler orientation training
We have a specialized piece of equipment at the yard, the "baler", to compact certain recycled materials to facilitate handling and transport. A baler machine operator is ideally supported by a yard volunteer who helps feed the baler and move bales.
There are six openings available for another baler orientation training session to be held on Saturday, January 18, 2014, from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. , to be followed up by baler operational experience during open-hours at the recycling yard. Please contact Henry Benskin (250-246-1212) if you would like one of the training spots.
Paid jobs
A very limited number of hourly paid jobs will be required for re-structured yard operations. These jobs will be advertised on e-Spokes in mid-late January, and successful applicants will be hired through TIRRA. Anyone interested in applying is encouraged to take the baler training session.
This is one in a series of notices that we will be posting in connection with restructured operations at the Recycling Yard.
Thank you, and please stay tuned for additional notices concerning the Recycling Yard.

The Thetis Island Community Association (TICA) and the Thetis Island Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association (TIRRA) offer a variety of community services through volunteer efforts. Both Associations are governed by separate Boards elected by their members.
TICA, which has a charitable status, publishes the Quarterly Magazine, owns and maintains the Forbes Community Centre that includes the library, community recreational and meeting areas as well as the sports court, community garden, children’s play area, computer access site, and kitchen facilities. It is home to worship services and many other activities; additionally, it is the Island’s Emergency Social Services site.
TIRRA administers the garbage, trash and recycling services, the community trail, St. Margaret’s Cemetery and routinely serves as an advocate for the community to a wide range of government agencies including representing us on the BC Ferries Advisory Committee.
These organizations require support from the entire community; both part-time and full-time residents and property owners. Financial assistance is essential. The volunteers who put in many hours holding meetings, managing funds, maintaining records, planning and organizing activities, (including work parties), attending to concerns and issues, writing letters and paying bills, and maintaining their areas of responsibility do so on your behalf. Even when you do not use the services provided, the existence of these services makes Thetis Island a better place to live or visit and enhances property values.
Click here to access the Fee Form.
The fees are being collected for both Associations by TICA. Kindly make your cheques out to TICA. TICA Note: When we receive your fee payment you will be added to the Membership List and become eligible to receive the ever-popular Thetis Island Quarterly Magazine. Additional contributions are welcome. TICA will be happy to issue tax receipts promptly for donations in excess of the membership fee.
