Ugly Beach Fire

The TIVFD responded this morning to a smoldering beach fire that had obviously been burning since the night before. Several garbage bags were beside the large, burning logs.  The fire was set in an area that normal high tides do not reach.  Thank you to the Aabergs who called it in.  They discovered the stinky fire at the ferry dock on the trail to the beach.

Although there had been three earlier ferries that morning, no one else reported the fire.  Please take all smoke seriously and call 911 if you find an abandoned campfire.

Shimmy Mob Thank You ~

On International Belly Dance Day, May 10th, 2014, some of Thetis Island’s very own Gypsy Dancers of the Salish Sea, led by Halaki (Char Aaberg) took part in an International Shimmy Mob. The Shimmy Mobs danced to promote public awareness of Belly Dance as a Performing Art and to raise funds for women’s shelters. We danced at the pub after the regatta for a great audience of community members and visiting sailors, raised over $700 for the Cowichan Women Against Violence Society (Duncan, BC), and had a lot of fun dancing for our cause! Thank you to all our sponsors, volunteers, donors and a great audience who cheered us on with gusto!

Special thanks to Paul Deacon for providing rehearsal and performance space and to Peter Luckham for videotaping our performance.

Sparky needs a ride home!

Can you help out the Fire Dept.?  The Sparky costume needs to be returned to the Fire Commissioner on Keating Cross Road in Saanichton, and the Post Office won't take it back.  Although it can arrive by post, it has to go back by courier (which we don't have) or have someone take it.  The box is the size of a bass drum.  Is anyone going to Victoria soon and can help us out?  We will give you our ferry card for the trip.

Thanks!

Thetis Island Golf Tournament

Come one, come all, you are invited to sign up for the 34th running of the TIO (Thetis Island Open) on July 5th, 2014 at the Mount Brenton Golf Club.  An entry form will be available in PDF format soon, for you to complete and return with payment as soon as possible.

New this year will be a $10,000.00 hole in one so, practice your 160 yard shots to be ready to collect.

Please note that the tournament coordinator will be away from the middle of June until just before the tournament so your entries need to be in early this year so that we can get the correct count in to the golf club before the coordinator departs.  Please have the entry forms in by June 10th.  The cheques can be post dated to the tournament date if you so wish.

If you have any questions, please contact either Bill Sharp at 250-246-3752 or Dave Fitzpatrick at 1-888-595-5212. Ask for Dave when you call.

Looking forward to seeing all of you this year.

Plot Preparation Contractor Needed

As many of you know in the community long time resident Kevin Hughes left the island earlier this year. Kevin was contracted by St. Margaret's Cemetery for a number of years to prepare the plots for the interment of cremated remains.  With his departure from Thetis we are in need of a person who would be willing to take up this position. The job would require this person to be on call to prepare the site when necessary. This generally happens 3 to 4 times a year.  We usually give about a week’s notice and ask that the plot be ready no more than 2 days before the actual interment. This is a paid position at $50.00 per job  and normally takes about one hour  depending on the plot location.

Those interested, please contact Suzanne Sarioglu 246-9965 or sarioglu@telus.net
