School District 79 News

As most of you are aware the Ministry of Education has replaced the Cowichan Valley School District Board with a supervisor. The linked information may be of interest to parents, students, and other members of our community.

The following link was sent by former Board Chair, Eden Haythornthwaite.

For 15 years I have called Thetis home, now that I'm off to Nanaimo to study theater, I will never forget Thetis Island.

Rosemary's Memorial

Many folks turned out today to pay their last respects to Rosemary Ann Boehringer.  All the stories spoke of an amazing, caring mother & friend with a fierce thirst for knowledge.  Thank you to Gloria and her team for putting on a beautiful afternoon showing their love for a wonderful woman.

And for all you that are wondering, here's a sample of a  "start ya bastard" video.

Silvery Tree Frog

Bill spotted this pretty little frog on our walkway this morning.  Just over 3 centimeters long, with fabulous camoflauge ~ however he almost got stepped on!

from Jane Toohey, Rosemary's niece...

Rosemary was my aunt (and my Godmother). She was my father's baby sister. My parents, Don and Joan Herbert (we all live in Australia) who still live at Eugowra in New South Wales, where Rosemary was born and grew up, visited Thetis a couple of times. They loved the beauty of it. I hoped to visit Rosemary, but tragically it is too late. Rosemary was a lovely and quite remarkable lady and I am so very sad at her death. My love and very best wishes to all her friends. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Looking for Laptops...

I am looking for 2 free, or nearly free, laptop computers to take to Mengo Hospital in Kampala, Uganda next week.  A group of volunteers from Victoria built an AIDS wing onto the hospital and are supporting the  project in a variety of ways.  They need laptop computers.

If you have one that you are happy to pass on, I can pick it up this weekend.

Please email Colleen Kasting at ckasting@telus.net

Recycling Plastics Presentation

Many thanks to Ann Eriksson for her very informative and extremely interesting presentation on plastics and their effects on our environment and our health. Ann’s session was filled with much need information and needless to say, was highly educational. Thanks also to Stephanie Cottell for helping organize Ann’s presentation.

The presentation was well attended at our community’s sanitation (solid waste) yard, on Saturday, August 25th. It is our hope that there will be follow-up information sessions, as well as future ESPOKES postings.

In the meantime, please ensure you do your best to assist our team at the sanitation yard; you can help by cleaning and presorting your recyclable materials as well as making sure that your household garbage contains no materials that can be recycled. The volunteers and staff at the yard will be more than happy to assist you and answer any questions you may have regarding solid waste collection, recyclable materials and appropriate garbage disposal.

Once again, our many thanks to Tim French and Vicki Walker and all the volunteers at the sanitation yard.
