Nature House Lite: Summer Pruning and T-bud Grafting Workshop (Thursday, August 8th, 10am - 12pm)

Location: Paula and John Errington’s property (92 Hollyberry Lane - first driveway on your right as you come down HBL)

Grafting is a horticultural technique used to join parts from two or more plants so that they appear to grow as a single plant. This can have many advantages, including disease/pest resistance, hardiness, sturdiness, hybrid, pollen, repair, curiosities, and more! In this workshop, our grafting guide, John Errington, will discuss the benefits of summer pruning of fruit trees as well as t-bud grafting of apple rootstock. Depending on the number of participants, you will have the opportunity to graft a bud to a rootstock. Last year, participants grafted three trees, and all were successful!

Note: There is limited parking on Hollyberry Lane, so please park at the entrance to Hollyberry Lane to allow access for incoming/outgoing vehicles. Thanks!

Thetis Island Merchandise at the Book and Bake Sale

Thetis Merchandise will be available for sale at the Book and Bake Sale on Saturday, from 10 - 1

This is an ideal time to get a new Thetis Island t-shirt, ball cap, fleece blanket or maybe a Thetis Island Map.

Many of you are familiar with the large map hanging inside at Forbes Hall; copies of this map, available in 3 sizes, will be available for sale on Saturday. Local artists, Bill Dickie and Mary Forbes created this map in 2005 as part of the Salish Sea Mapping Project.

In addition to the short-sleeve Thetis Island t-shirts in many colours, there are also black t-shirts, available in short and long sleeves. These feature an image of Maynard Johnny Jr.’s art installation on the exterior of Forbes Hall Community Centre. 5% of the sales of these t-shirts go to Hope and Health, Penelakut, a charity supported by Maynard Johnny Jr.

Proceeds benefit TICA’s Back into the Black Debt Reduction Program.

Danger Class Drops

The Danger Class Rating dropped on Monday low enough to go to MODERATE but is forecast to be rising to HIGH by Wednesday. The big drop allows us to immediately go to High Hazard Activities on early shift (work until 1 pm then post a two-hour fire watch) without waiting the three days when coming out of the EXTREME rating. This means that starting Tuesday you can mow, mill, chainsaw, etc. in the mornings until the Danger rating rises again. As always, keep water and tools to extinguish sparks at your worksite.

Outdoor fires are still banned by the Province until the end of October. Propane campfire appliances or stoves are not prohibited.
