The Coming Summer EXTREME Fire Hazard

The meteorological forecasting for the Spring/Summer/Fall this year is alarming. It looks like we are heading into another extended hot, dry fire season. If you are planning activities such as tree falling, chain sawing, excavating, road building, saw milling, etc later this year, please consider getting it done soon (before you will be required to stop by the complete fire hazard shutdowns).

The trend to longer fire seasons does not work in our favour.

There are six weeks left for outdoor burning without a permit so keep checking the venting index daily to see if you can burn.

We have a certified Fire Smart technician on Thetis ready to help you with Fire Smarting your property and home. Contact Stu Downey at 246-3311 to arrange for a free Fire Smart Home Assessment.

Does anyone by chance have a copy of ‘The Castle of Wizardry’ by David Eddings that I could borrow or buy?

Organic Compost Orders

We are ready to organize early spring delivery of certified organic compost from Farm to Garden.

We are waiting for the latest trucking quote, but imagine it may be similar to last fall, working out to $122/yard.

It is excellent quality compost, and we are typically ordering the fine sifted type, which is great for amending flower and veggie beds.

Chad will continue to offer his delivery service with his dumping trailer, for an additional cost.

We are starting to gather numbers so we'll know how many deliveries to arrange, so please let us know if you are interested and how many yards you will need.

We will also get some bagged product in too if you only need a smaller amount.

Questions and requests to info@jollityfarm.ca.

With thanks,  Jollity Farmers

Incursion of Urban Values into Rural Areas

The CRD (Capital Regional District) is taking a Salt Spring family to court for refusing to relinquish their rooster. Apparently, CRD Bylaw Enforcement is hoping to win this case in order to set a precedent across the Southern Gulf Islands. The CRD Chief Enforcement Officer is reported to not see small 'hobby' farms or 'back yard flocks' as legitimate farming.

Luckily we are not in the CRD, but if you would like to help your neighbors on Salt Spring who are suffering from this drive to urbanization, and perhaps reduce the risk of this kind of thing eventually happening here on Thetis, there is a petition you could sign at:

Lost & Found at Forbes Hall

When an item is found at Forbes Hall, please leave it in the entry coat racks – hanging if able, and on the shelf above, if not.

When looking for an item you have forgotten at Forbes Hall, look in the entry coat racks – either hanging or on the shelf above.

After a month or so, we may post that the article is there for pick up, and if it continues its residency at Forbes Hall it will be taken to the thrift store for a new life.

Thanks,

Forbes Hall Facilities Group
