Warming Center at Forbes Hall

We have all heard that the weather is supposed to get colder over the next several days……

When the overnight temperatures are lower than 0C or 32F Forbes Hall will be opened as a warming center from 9 am -1 pm or when activities are on. So if you need a place to warm up on these days come to Forbes Hall. The criteria will be reassessed daily.

We are looking for volunteers to open the hall and be there during these times. Note when there is an activity at the hall those times are assumed covered. The library is open Saturday 10-1 and Sunday 1-4, Tuesday and Friday there is exercise at 9 am -10:30 am and knitting 2pm - 4pm . Church is on from 10 - noon or so Sunday am

Anybody willing to help please email acanthurus61@gmail.com. My old Shaw email address is no longer in service.

Stay warm.

Robbie Burns Night Tickets are Now Available

A dinner in honour of Scotland’s much celebrated national poet Robert Burns. It will feature a traditional dinner featuring Cock-a-Leekie soup followed with a main course of Haggis (a crumbly sausage, with a coarse oaty texture and a warming peppery flavour) with Neeps and Tatties (that’s rutabaga and potatoes). Sides and sauces will also be served ending with a very fine Scottish trifle dessert. .

Entertainment will include a piper (from the world famous SFU Pipe Band) and highland dancers interspersed with traditional speeches and recitations of his poetry!” Scotch whiskey and other drinks will be available at the cash bar.

Tickets are $50 each. In previous years tickets have sold out, so we encourage people to buy their tickets early. Bringing the gang? Consider reserving a table of 8 for $400.

Contact David Reay regarding tickets. I will be bringing tickets to Soups On tomorrow or reach out to me by text or email.

Sharing a Great Experience

Yesterday I had the pleasure of having my teeth cleaned by Meghan in her dental van (The Wandering Pearl). I have long avoided dental visits because of past bad experiences. No longer is this the case. The visit to this dental hygienist was so convenient ( parked outside Forbes Hall ). Her van was warm and set up a well as any dental room. She was gentle, kind and professional. https://www.nanaimohygiene.ca/

I highly recommend her services and she is a lovely addition to our on-island health care team.

Outside Faucets

Remember to remove hoses from outside taps.

This allows the water to drain from "frost free" faucets.
The subzero temperatures are around for almost a week.

Urgent Notice! Neighbourhood Watch Alert

A male person with no vehicle has been breaking into outbuildings and also a vehicle at night to sleep and has also stolen supplies such as tarps, a Trapper Nelson backpack, rain gear, axes and a large knife. He is known to police and the RCMP came over Saturday night with a police dog but were unable to locate him.

Because of the cold and stormy weather tonight, he may be holing up in an unsecured outbuilding. Please check your property and call 911 to report to the RCMP if you see anything suspicious. The first report to the RCMP was last Tuesday, and he is believed to still be here trespassing on Thetis Island.

Upholstery Work

Is there anyone on the island with experience re-upholstering furniture?

We have a sort of built in couch that the fake leather is letting go on.
I'd like to re-cover it and make it usable for years to come.

Bea Miche is Turning 99 Years Young

Hi Thetis Island residents

Bea Michie of Dragon Rock on Pilkey Point Road is turning 99 years young this Friday the 12th of January.

Bea initially bought her property in the 70's and it's been in her family ever since.

It was suggested that it would be a nice idea for those that wanted to wish her a Happy Birthday could perhaps leave a note or a card for her at the Post Office to brighten her day.  I'm sure it would be appreciated.  Let’s honor the love and wisdom of our elders.

Thanks, in advance...

Richard and Tess DeMarco
