Lives behind the Headstones

Just in time for Christmas a new reprinting of Lives Behind the Headstones written by Sheila Kelsey is available. This is a much loved documentation and history of the first settlers on Thetis as well as other elders of the community that are buried in St.Margaret’s Cemetery.

$25 per copy

Thank You

SOAS would like to thank the many people who so generously supported us at the Christmas Bazaar. With donations nearing $600.00, we are well poised for our upcoming project which will be another permaculture installation.

Shirley Burr was the winner of a Fuji apple tree. Congratulations Shirley and a heartfelt thank you to all our supporters.

Gardening: Looking for a Valuable Member of the Brassicaceae Family -> Horseradish

I've always grown it in the north and like to add it to our garden again.

Does anyone grow Horseradish and can share some?

Like pencil diameter root pieces and ~ 2" to 3" long will work to get started.
Please let me know.
Thanks, Matthias

Thetis Island Christmas Market

A huge thank you to all who took part in the Thetis Island Christmas Market.

To those who agreed to have a table - you outdid yourselves with your creativity!

To those who spent hours making us wonderful eats and drinks - you sustained us and made us want more!

To those who came and shopped - we saw lots of happy faces bearing away their prizes - you made the event!

And to those who helped put everything back where it came from and carried out what was left of the market - we are so grateful for your help!

And some other winners - chocolate covered raisins - Terry Hamilton. Jelly beans - Abby (from Capernwray). Poinsettia - Edie Galbraith. And the door prize - Theresa Elsie.

Thank you again everyone - you all made it such a success.

Dental Hygiene

Hello Thetis Islanders,

Some time ago we learned there was an option for us who live on Thetis to get the Hygienist dental care here and not to go elsewhere. I would think this is exactly what many of us on Thetis aim at: to get as much food and as many services locally, without having to leave island, since every leave means some energy burning (if we go only to Chemainus) or a lot of energy burning, if our hygienist is in Ladysmith or Duncan or Nanaimo.

I was rather surprised to learn that Ellen and I were the only ones who reached out to accept this offer and I am challenging my Thetis Islanders Eco Friendly Friends to think of the offer and what it brings to us regarding our contribution to less energy burning.

I understand we all have our loyalties. I, for one, am quite happy with my hygienist of 5 years. Yet, I have to go to Ladysmith to get my care. I thought about my loyalty and decided to be loyal to Mother Earth.

Here is the contact:

My full name is Meghan Mitchell and my business name is Nanaimo Hygiene.
   Phone:

   Email:
nanaimohygiene@hotmail.com
   Social: @nanaimodentalhygiene

   Here are the reviews:

I do have reputable reviews and I have been working as a hygienist for 14 years. I am an instructor at VIU in the dental hygiene program and I always stay up to date on my continuing education. I think you will be very happy with my services.

Kind regards, Jan

Ugly Christmas Sweater Soup’s On: Wednesday, Dec. 13th

Join us for a fun Soup’s On, December 13th (last one of 2023).

Wear that weird, ugly, strange Christmas sweater that you pull out once a year. Don’t have one? Use glue to stick fun Christmas items all over a sweater you no longer wear.

If you don’t have one, simply do not want to wear one, or whatever, come enjoy a bowl of soup while laughing with your neighbours at the weird things people will wear!

Ugly Sweater Soup’s On – December 13th.

Note: a regular, fantastic as usual, Soup’s On is happening on December 6th.
