May 8th, 7:00-8:00 Forbes Hall

Adam Sandell is a GP and medical advisor to the BC Ministry of Health on MAID, and he provides teaching and training on MAID. He’ll be giving a talk and answering questions on MAID eligibility, law and practicalities.

Canada’s medical assistance in dying (MAID) law seeks to respect personal autonomy for those seeking access to MAID, while at the same time protecting vulnerable people and the equality rights of all Canadians.

Cemetery Clean Up May 25th

Saturday May 25th from 10-3

St. Margaret’s Cemetery Committee will be having its annual maintenance day. The cemetery is a vault of island history and is the permanent home for many of our forebears. From tidying up headstones, to general landscaping there will be a range of projects to suit everyone's interests and abilities.

Please plan to come by and join us, we encourage everyone to join. If possible, please bring small garden tools for general landscaping and/or scrub brushes and water pails to clean grave markers. We would encourage you to contribute to the picnic lunch, where we will remember and celebrate the lives that came before us.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Do You Have a Mooring?

After a lot of effort, the Thetis Island Marine Association has completed the mapping of the existing buoys in Telegraph Harbour.

We have been working with transport Canada to help keep our harbours safe.
Over the years - Some moorings have transferred ownership and/or have been abandoned.
Mooring owners are required to upkeep their moorings and have the proper identification, or they may be subject to removal.

Why it is Important to Comply with the Regulations?

1. You can be fined for not meeting the requirements set out in the regulations and standards.

2. In the event of an accident, private buoy owners may also be found liable for any damages resulting from negligence respecting their private buoy.

3. Transport Canada has now been given additional resources to enforce regulations so it is important to comply with these regulations and there is increasing pressure for moorage.

Currently about half of the moorings in Telegraph Harbour are non-compliant:

Step one:
Check this link to view mooring information, confirm that your information is correct. Please contact TIMA via email with updated information. (Jaime White and Chris Rennie map)
https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1VMIRt7O6xFcVV3HSrtnuIGOqqAid0Mw&ll=48.98165829225659%2C-123.66984026686707&z=18

Mooring requirements are quite prescriptive and can be found on the TIMA website on the Thetis Island Community website in community groups Thetis Island Marine
https://www.thetisisland.net/tima/

Moorings must be identified physically on the mooring float with who is the current owner and contact information- updates can be sent to thetisislandmarine@gmail.com

The People’s Apothecary Garden - Plant of the Week #5 - Sweet Woodruf

A personal favourite, sweet woodruff is a gently spreading plant with predictable progression. Since planting it in 2020, it has increased its coverage, but not greedily so (unlike some! - I’m looking at you, Primrose).

Our sweet woodruff is now on full display at the PAG, but it will only present its delicate flowers for a short while before closing up shop the remainder of the year. For any interested observers, the PAG will be open Tuesdays between 3-5pm (more on PAG open hours as the summer progresses).

To read about its culinary and medicinal uses (and for pictures), see: https://www.thetisislandnatureconservancy.org/single-post/plant-of-the-week
