National Volunteer Week April 14-20

National Volunteer Week is a special time set aside in April each year to honor and recognize Canadians (Thetis Island volunteers) who donate time and energy to their fellow citizens. National Volunteer Week also raises awareness of the vital contribution volunteers make to our communities and our country.

History of National Volunteer Week

National Volunteer Week was first proclaimed in 1943. In Montréal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver, Women's Voluntary Services organized special events to draw the public's attention to the vital contribution women were making to the war effort on the home front. In the late 1960s, the idea of a designated week to honor volunteers was revived and the focus was broadened to include all community volunteers. With local community organizations taking the lead, National Volunteer Week promotions and celebrations continue to grow.

Celebrate National Volunteer Week. April 14-20

From coast to coast, volunteers continue to strengthen our communities.

On Thetis Island, you as volunteers serve on boards and committees, organize events and activities, First Responders and Fire Fighters, coach teams, read to children, support the greater community through organized health programs, food bank and so much more.

Volunteers do the work they do because they believe in causes, equal opportunities, clean, healthy and safe community spaces, active living, and helping others. Volunteers simply aspire to make life better for others and we honor you for doing so.

Reflecting on the efforts you make we continue to promote and celebrate volunteers not only during National Volunteer Week but each and every day.

So, thanks for doing what you do.

Anne-Marie

Visitors' Guide 2024

Do you have a business, service, activity, or notice that you would like visitors to Thetis to know about this summer?

This year's version is being put together now, in order to try to get it out before the May long weekend.

To see the layout and way different people have listed themselves, have a look at last year's Guide, at https://www.thetisisland.net/info/Thetis_Island_VG_2023.pdf

The Guide is generally stocked at the Marinas, Howling Wolf Farm Market, Capernwray, available at the ferry booth, at the Salish Market, Jollity Farm Cafe and at the Chemainus Visitors' Centre. Real Estate agents hand them out to prospective buyers, and most of the businesses listed all hand them out. They get around.

The per line cost is kept as low as possible, so that it's just the cost of printing divided out among the advertisers. Which is why I don't know the per line cost until I know how many are coming in this year, which tells me the size of the sheet of paper, so I can then get a quote from printers.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you are interested in being part of this community effort.

New Members Wanted for the Structure Protection Unit (SPU)

The SPU is an auxiliary support team to the Thetis Island Volunteer Fire Department (TIVFD). Our role is to protect buildings with water sprinklers in the event of a wildfire threat, and also to promote FireSmart resiliency on Thetis. There is some turn over in the group, and new volunteers are needed to maintain an elite force of 10 to 12 people. The function of this and the other auxiliaries (Water hauling, Rest & rehab, Traffic control, Communications) is to allow the Fire Department to focus on the active firefighting bit by reducing or eliminating some of the peripheral (non-hot zone) activities.

Opportunity: Learn what you can do to protect your own property. Get to know some of your Thetis Island neighbors. Get some exercise while doing your volunteering bit for the island.

Prerequisites: None. The main thing is willingness to learn. Experience with pumps, hoses, sprinklers, & ladders, ideal but not necessary. There is also one non-physical position available for an administrative / computer-based documentation role.

Time commitment: On average we end up about 2 hours per month in the Fire season (April or May thru Oct or Nov). This time is typically spent doing a practice run of setting up sprinklers to create a humidity bubble around the structure.  Some additional training time is needed periodically.

More info: If you want to know more, please feel free to reach out to me or any of the other current members: Graeme Shelford, Stu Downey, Laurie Leung, Peter Walsh, David Reay, Bill Dickie (B1), Bill Golley (B2), Geoff Porter, Craig Terry

Sincerely,
Jim Moloney, SPU team lead

The TICA library is open with a Friend of the Library in attendance Saturday 10-1, Sunday 1-4 and Monday 10-1.

For library patrons, a gentle reminder to return library materials in a timely manner. Some items have been borrowed for a long time, restricting the enjoyment by other users.

Thank you.
