Recent Thefts

Hi,

My name is Caroline Hanson and my husband, Steve, and I have a cottage at 262 Forbes Drive. I just saw Chris’s post in E-spokes today about the recent Thefts. Just thought I would pass this on….not sure if it is helpful or not, but the night the gas tank was stolen from the boat I was awoken by a boat with a loud motor going close to shore at 3:15 am. The boat was heading south and cut it’s engine around the cove, about 6 houses down, so I just thought it was someone just coming home late ;) Anyways, the motor started again, so I went out on our balcony to see the boat head across the water in the direction of Chemainus/Ladysmith. With not knowing much about boats, It was an open tin type boat. I wasn’t sure who I should contact to let them know what I saw, until I saw Chris’s post today. Hope this is helpful in some way in catching these thieves!

ThINC Nature House - Today's Activities - Thursday, Aug 24th

2:00 pm start
Wild Creatives: Twined Basketry with Stephanie Cottell (all ages)
Location: The Nature House at The Portal, 254 North Cove Road

Join local plant lover and fibre art enthusiast Steph in a creative exploration of crafting with Yellow Flag Iris, a plant that is considered invasive in this ecosystem. Crafting with natural, biodegradable invasive plant materials can help people recognize and manage the spread of these often tenacious species and take pressure off native plants while offering an opportunity to learn new skills (or reawaken old ones!) and make lovely, Earth-friendly things! Steph will share two techniques: cordage making and a simple twined mini-basket.
Note: Although this was a RSVP event (Steph needed to know how many supplies were required), please feel free to join to observe and learn!

Example mini-basket here!www.thetisislandnatureconservancy.org/single-post/nature-house-week-8-events-aug-23-27

6:30 pm start
ThINC Tank: Screening: Kiss the Ground (2020) OR Gather (2020) (youth, adults) ---- Audience Choice!!!
Location: The Nature House at The Portal, 254 North Cove RoadTonight we’ll be screening:

Kiss the Ground (2019) - a concerning yet hopeful documentary about industrial agriculture, soil health, and climate change. “A revolutionary group of activists, scientists, farmers, and politicians band together in a global movement of "Regenerative Agriculture" that could balance our climate, replenish our vast water supplies, and feed the world.

OR!

Gather (2020) - a beautiful film about reclaiming Indigenous food sovereignty, overcoming genocide, and building power and resiliency around food. “Gather is an intimate portrait of the growing movement amongst Native Americans to reclaim their spiritual, political and cultural identities through food sovereignty, while battling the trauma of centuries of genocide. Gather follows Nephi Craig, a chef from the White Mountain Apache Nation (Arizona), opening an indigenous café as a nutritional recovery clinic; Elsie Dubray, a young scientist from the Cheyenne River Sioux Nation (South Dakota), conducting landmark studies on bison; and the Ancestral Guard, a group of environmental activists from the Yurok Nation (Northern California), trying to save the Klamath river.”

Stolen and Break & Enter, Rash of Thefts

It seems there are some folks back at it on Thetis Island lately.

Someone stole an aluminum Grumman Canoe and a seat from the rescue boat from our dock likely Monday night. Lock was cut. That means they came prepared.

Previous to that the Pump House was broken into a couple of weeks ago.

The two thieves are adult males. One looks early 20s sweatpants and hoodie. The other 50 plus with a very distinct nose and chin. Dark jacket with faux furry lined hood. Wearing work gloves.

Break in took place between 3 and 4 am. It was only a couple days earlier neighbours had gas tank stolen from boat. Today I see a battery was stolen from Kens truck.

Please call or text if you have any info. Reward for info if it leads to the return of Canoe. Reward for the canoe returned no questions asked if it is returned by end of day today.

Please call the police to report suspicious activity. It seems this is not the first rash of these type of thefts. Let’s keep an eye on things for each other.

Thoughts suggestions? Anyone else been thieved lately?
