Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 8:29AM Please understand that there is only one person (Veronica) handling the Fire Permit process and she cannot always respond immediately.
Allow 24 to 48 hours for her to handle the process.
The Province unexpectedly rescinded the outdoor burning bans in the Coastal Region late Tuesday afternoon. We are trying to keep on top of the volume of immediate requests in a timely manner.
And significantly, for the next few days at least, the Venting Index for our area is poor and yard waste smoke producing fires wouldn’t be permitted anyway.
Please be patient with us. Our hard-working Permit Process Person thanks you.

Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 8:25AM Louise will be stepping down as "keeper of the gate" this Saturday the 30th.
Thank you, Louise, for faithfully serving our community these many years.
We have appreciated your cheerful spirit and vivid sense of humor.
You will be missed.

Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 8:25AM Thetis Island Elementary Students will be doing the Terry Fox Run this Friday morning! We will be running to and from the Fairy Slipper trail.
Please drive with extra caution in this area.
We will also be running the Fairy Slipper trail, so if you plan on a trail walk that day, be aware that you may run into a gaggle of kids!
Please consider donating to the Terry Fox Foundation by going to their website and clicking on "Donate Now." We are not officially registered as a school, but it's a great cause regardless.
Thank You, TIES Staff.

Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 8:23AM The (Category 1) campfire prohibition and the Category 2 and Category 3 open fire prohibition will be lifted in the Coastal Fire Centre starting at 12:00 noon, Pacific Daylight Time (PDT), on Wednesday, September 27, 2022. This means that all open burning will once again be permitted within the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdiction.
Other activities which were previously banned, but will now be permitted include:
The use of tiki and similar kinds of torches
The use of chimineas
The use of outdoor stoves or other portable campfire apparatus without a Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or Underwriter Laboratories of Canada (ULC) rating
Fireworks, including firecrackers.
Sky Lanterns
Binary Exploding Targets
Burn Barrels or Burn Cages of any size or description.
Air Curtain Burners
Regarding Category 2 and Category 3 open fires, this change will allow the following activities:
"category 2 open fire" which means an open fire, other than a campfire, that
--burns material in one pile not exceeding 2 m in height and 3 m in width,
--burns material concurrently in 2 piles each not exceeding 2 m In height and 3 m in width.
YOU MUST APPLY ONLINE FOR A CAMPFIRE PERMIT OR A YARD WASTE PERMIT. Go to www.thetisislandfire.ca and follow the link on the left for a fire permit.
NO GARBAGE BURNING.
Category 3 Fires require both a TIVFD inspection pre-ignition and a Provincila R Number in place.
CHECK THE VENTING INDEX PRIOR TO LIGHTING YOUR YARD WASTE PILE. FIRE SMOKE IS A HEALTH HAZARD. LET’S ALL KEEP OUR NEIGHBOURS HEALTHY.

Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 8:21AM In this issue of The Ripple, our summer Nature House coordinator team, Eden Luymes and Erica Ralston share their experiences on a summer full of learning, exploring, and generally having fun with the Thetis Island community. Their reflections are thought provoking and encourage you to take a step back and ponder some of the things that really matter in life - relationships - to the Earth and to each other.
Our Super Steward for this issue is the Jollity team who never ceases to amaze. Congrats on your newest endeavor!

Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 8:19AM Dear fellow Thetis Islanders,
The ThINC team invites you to attend our Annual General Meeting on Saturday, October 7th at 2pm at Forbes Hall. Join us to hear about our activities over the year and what we have planned for the coming months, share some refreshments, and vote for our Board of Directors.
In order to vote at the AGM, ThINC memberships must be current for the 2023 year. If you enjoy our nature education programs, walk the trail at the Fairyslipper Forest Nature Reserve, value the protection of the Moore Hill Nature Reserve, have a screech owl box on your property, benefit from our BC Community Bat program, visit the People's Apothecary Garden, or appreciate our other stewardship, conservation, sustainability and community food security initiatives, we hope you will become or renew your membership using the linked membership form (below) or by renewing at the AGM. The annual membership fee remains at $20 for an individual or family and $5 for a youth membership.
Membership form: https://www.thetis island nature conservancy.org/_files/ugd/a5ed41_67fc506d7588444a9f89dc86f89ef244.pdf
We'd also love new board members to join our team. We're an easy-going enthusiastic bunch dedicated to nature. If you are interested in becoming a ThINC director and have questions, contact Ann at 250-246-8176 or email us at info@thetisislandnatureconservancy.org or simply attend the AGM.
We're grateful for your past and ongoing support for nature education and conservation on Thetis Island. We look forward to seeing you on October 7th!
Sincerely,
The ThINC team
Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 8:18AM Yes, we still have our weekly market at Jollity Farm!
Perhaps our e-spokes message about our farm shop in Chemainus wasn't 100%
clear, as a few people have asked...
There is no change to the Saturday market at our farm (at least until it gets too cold). We will continue to stock the marinas and invite you to visit us at the farm for your weekly provisions and veggies. We are just spreading the Jollity a little further around!
Thanks from the Jollity Farmers
Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 8:17AM Good morning to all. ISO canning jars, if you have some stashed away, not being used, I would be willing to pay for them, as well as pick them up.
That would be wonderful. Thank you, so much,
Lenora 250-702-5769
Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 8:16AM The Fire Hazard rating is being taken down to "Moderate" as of Monday the 25th, so no restrictions on chainsawing, mowing, excavating etc.
Still NO open burning - the moisture needs to sink in. Once again, thank you all for your cooperation!
