Parking – Family Fun Day

Just a heads up, the hall parking lot will be closed for vehicles during the FFD. Please park along Mission Rd, the school parking lot or wherever you can find a spot. This will allow guests to roam the hall grounds freely and safely.

Anyone who may struggle with mobility troubles, please feel free to contact me. We’ll be happy to escort your vehicle as close to the action as possible.

A friendly reminder…races and games are not just for kids. Parents, grandparents and great grandparents will be welcome and encouraged to join in.

Looking forward to seeing many island neighbours this Saturday!

TIVFD at Family Fun Day

The TIVFD Water Supply and Structural Protection Unit Teams will be on hand at Family Fun Day with a “drop tank” of sanitized rainwater for the kids to play in and wildfire sprinkler units to demonstrate. We want to assure you that apart from the low flow sprinklers, all water will be recycled back into our fire water suppression tanks. Nothing will be wasted. Due to the drought conditions, the fire department has even received notice from the province to not wash our fire trucks. So please pardon our dust.

From the Library

Well, we’ve had another successful annual Book and Bake fundraiser for our TICA library. This event requires generous book and baking donations, enthusiastic purchasers of book and baking and of course volunteers who set up, sell and clean after the sale.

I am very grateful for the help from:
Liz Forseth, Anne Barr, Vicki Walker, Laurie Barr, Nelson Stephenson, Jacob Forseth, Ann and Paul McMillen, Ellen and Jan Cerny, Maureen and Wayne, Catrina, Olivia, David and Isabel Withler, Christine Paterson, Shirlee Harris, Laurel March, Jan Phelps, Ella and Rylie, Glen and Wendy Andison, Ken Redman, James Alton, Georgina Maule, Ellie and Michael, Samantha Forseth, Finley Hardy, Carol Swann and on beverage station duty Gurk. I sure hope I have not missed anyone. It was quite the crowd.

Baking $1103
Books $1302
TOTAL. $2405.00

For a healthy library budget.
Thanks to all participants. It would not happen without you.

Yellow Weather Warning

Yellow weather notification for a hot and dry spell next week (August 13 to 18, 2023). The most likely regions for Heat Warnings are the South Coast and Southwestern Interior. Temperatures are expected to marginally reach criteria; this event will not be like June 2021. The hot and dry weather will increase risk of heat related illness and continue the wildfire danger. Also, the stagnant high-pressure ridge will likely worsen air quality due to wildfire smoke and other pollutants.

ThINC Nature House - Today's Events - Thurs, Aug 10th

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm drop-in
Wild Creatives: Nature Collage and Book-making (all ages)
Location: The Nature House at The Portal, 254 North Cove Road

There are so many inspiring textures and patterns in nature! We’ll be making prints from flowers, trees, and other natural textures and collaging them into mini art books with printmaker and bookbinder Ruby Lewis. She is an artist who takes inspiration from trees, water, and the elements.

6:30 pm start
ThINC Tank: Resilient Gardens for a Changing Climate Screening (youth, adults)
Location: The Nature House at The Portal, 254 North Cove Road

Our regional climate is transforming rapidly as the global climate changes, with extreme weather events setting records. What does this mean for our food gardens and landscapes? How can we take on the challenge of increasing local food resilience and enhancing our landscapes ecologically to respond to our changing climate?

Join us for a screening of another webinar from Transition Salt Spring and gardener Linda Gilkeson. Learn how extreme weather affects plants, including trees, and how to design resilient food and ornamental gardens that help plants survive our changing weather patterns. Discover the important role gardeners can play in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, including designing landscapes to capture carbon.

Trails: Public Notice

Please be careful on the Thetis trail network. Due to various circumstances trail maintenance has not been ongoing.

Please be aware that the extended drought we’re experiencing stresses the forest and makes conditions unpredictable. Planning for the fall includes having an arborist assess the trees for potential hazards.

Any concerns? Please contact Vicki Walker at 250-246-9126 or Pat English at puzzlnut@telus.net.
