CVRD 2022 Budget Update

The CVRD Board has finished final deliberation on the 2022 CVRD Budget as of 23 Mar 2022. The Area G Saltair Gulf Islands increase over 2021 has worked out to 0.95%. This increase may vary between Saltair and Gulf Islands depending on the services that each Area G community participates in and the BC Assessment decrease in Managed Forest assessments that will reflect on the residential taxation with a minimal increase.

Forbes Hall - Generator

I am pleased to announce that $25,000 of the Area G Saltair/Gulf Islands Community Works Funds (Gas tax) 3.0 has been allocated towards a generator for Forbes Hall. Forbes Hall is an Emergency Reception Centre and having the generator on hand during an emergency will provide the community with a safe and secure shelter for residents and visitors in the event of an emergency.  A bit hard to imagine all of you swimming to the Frank Jameson Community Centre in Ladysmith or the Cowichan Community Centre in Duncan.

Thetis Island Wharf (Thetis Island & Hudson Island)

I am also pleased to announce that under the 2022 Thetis Island Wharf Budget $116,000 of the Area G Saltair/Gulf Islands Community Works Funds 3.0 has been allocated towards the Thetis Island Wharf Revitalization project.

Best regards,
Lynne Smith
CVRD Director Area G Saltair/Gulf Islands

Forbes Hall – Health Services Aides – Volunteer Positions

Forbes Hall Health Services is looking for 2 or 3 people to volunteer as aides in assisting patients in the use of the Care Station at Forbes Hall for virtual care, and in the future for onsite care.  We anticipate that the use will be sporadic to start.

It is hoped that these volunteers will be able to take turns, based on availability, to have Forbes Hall unlocked and welcoming to the patients, orient them to the Hall, and specifically the Care Station, stay in the building until they are finished their appointment, assist them in leaving, and then shutdown and secure the building.

No medical assistance is required or expected.  These volunteers will be there simply to provide the patients with a welcoming and confidential experience, while managing the security of the space. Average time per patient would be under an hour, time to browse some books in the lovely library.

If you think this is a way in which you would like to contribute to our community, please contact: Ann Dickie 250-246-4079 or
dickie.ann@gmail.com

On behalf of Audrey, I would like to thank the Thetis Island Fire Department, whose members dealt with the situation with the utmost professionalism and compassion.

There will be a community celebration of Pete’s life and service in the coming months.

Back into the Black TICA Meetings - Summary

Summary of Recent TICA Members Meetings

In 2021, twelve Thetis Islanders loaned TICA $335,000 to complete the expansion of Forbes Hall. TICA held two membership meetings in February to explore ways to generate enough money to pay off a good portion of the debt when it matures in early 2024 -- thus reducing the amount of a mortgage and ensuing interest rates needed to repay the total debt. At these meetings there was strong support for a Pledge Program, which many organizations have successfully used to provide a predictable and reliable income stream for debt repayment.

In a Pledge Program donors commit to a set monthly or annual donation for a fixed period of time. This donation can be as large or small as is affordable to the donor be it $20 a month, $100 a month or another amount. Ultimately, with a high level of participation and collective responsibility, the debt could be drastically reduced, or possibly paid in full, by the time the loans mature.

TICA is now developing a Community Pledge Program and more details about the program and how to get involved will follow shortly. A launch event is being planned for late April 2022 at the Hall to officially kick-start the program.

Note: a more detailed summary was emailed to all members, if you for any reason did not receive yours, please contact Teresa Moore (TICA Secretary) at teresamoore386@gmail.com
