Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 8:27AM Bat Count Helps Monitor Endangered Wildlife
Spring is here, with rain, flowers, insects, and – bats! Our BC bats are now returning to summer roost sites. One of our more familiar species in buildings and bat boxes is the Little Brown Myotis. Like all BC bats, the Little Brown Myotis is an essential part of our ecology, consuming many insect pests each night. Unfortunately, the Little Brown Myotis is now endangered in Canada. In fact, bats in BC suffer from many threats, and almost half of our 15 species are ‘at-risk’.
A simple way to support bats is to participate in the BC Annual Bat Count this June. The BC Community Bat Program is requesting colony reports and volunteer assistance for this citizen-science initiative that encourages residents to count bats at local roost sites.
The BC Annual Bat Count is easy, fun, and safe, not to mention vital for monitoring bat populations. “The counts are a wonderful way for people to get outside, learn about bats, and be involved in collecting important scientific information” says Rob Welsh, coordinator of the Thetis Island Community Bat Program. Volunteers wait outside a known roost site, such as a bat-box, barn, or attic, and count bats as they fly out at twilight. A guano sample can also be sent in to identify the species of bat at the roost site. Find more information at https://bcbats.ca/get-involved/counting-bats/.
The count data helps biologists understand bat distribution and monitor for impacts of the devastating bat disease called white-nose syndrome. White-nose syndrome is an introduced fungal disease, fatal for bats but not for other animals or humans. Not yet found in BC, the disease continues to spread in Washington State, less than 100 km from our border. Results from the Bat Count may help prioritize areas in BC for research into treatment options and recovery actions.
Funded by the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, the Forest Enhancement Society of BC, the Habitat Stewardship Program, and the Thetis Island Nature Conservancy, also with support of the BC Conservation Foundation and the Province of BC, the BC Community Bat Program provides information for people dealing with bat issues on their property or who have questions about how to attract bats. To find out more about bat counts or white-nose syndrome, to report a dead bat, or to get advice on managing bats in buildings, call Rob at 250-246-1547 or email: rmwelsh@telus.net

Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 8:21AM My daughter Athenia and I are looking for a private dock to keep our 8' dinghy during the summer. We are quiet (I am anyway) and respectful. We would only use the space to access our dingy when rowing out to our sailboat and heading back in.
Very willing to pay a small monthly fee for the privilege and payment would be in advance. Location would need to be in Telegraph Harbour. Our mooring pin is located close to the entrance but if dock is located a fair distance away...my next e-spokes post will be looking for a small motor.

Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 8:19AM Dear Parents,
In addition to our regular soccer practices, I am going to run The 2022 Thetis Athletic & Construction Skills Academy during July and August. My intention is to provide lectures in the following areas:
A. Sports:
Cross-country running, swimming, ping pong, tennis, badminton, cycling, field hockey and various types of kinesthetic exercises, including gymnastic exercises, rope/tree climbing, headstands, hand walking, etc. The idea is to get the athletes/students together two times a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays (Mondays will stay for soccer practice) with Wednesdays as their Individual Training Day. We will start at 10 am and finish at 12:00 or 1:00, depending on the interest and number of students. We will start with sports at 10 am and in an hour or so we will move to work activities.
I intend to be serious about it. It will not be a walk in the park. There are already serious participants enrolled. If you as a parent want your kid(s) to take part in dedicated physical activities during the summer, please contact me. The numbers are not important. I will work with one or 15 children and, as I have mentioned, the interest is there.
B: Manual Skills:
I would like to engage women and men on Thetis who are good with tools and would like to share their skills with kids. This part of the Academy is still being discussed, mainly for safety reasons, but I have a lot of hope I will find willing and good teachers in woodworking, auto mechanics and (if possible) other activities, such as blacksmithing.
If you are interested, please get back to me. Again, this is not a fun activity. It is about health and physical prowess. I expect dedication either for one week, two weeks, three weeks, one month or 6 weeks - exactly as if they were in a camp. When your family is away, the athletes will be excused. However, if they are here, they will be expected to come – if they commit. Arriving late, not being fully engaged, whining and/or generally bringing others down with complaints, will have necessary consequences.
If you think your child would benefit from the suggested activities, please contact me at jcerny07@gmail.com. As an athlete and as a coach I have been in possibly one hundred or even more of these camps. They can mean a lot. They can change lives. It all depends.
Thanks a lot, Jan.

Thank you to those who have already reserved.
The lambs are healthy and happily growing fat on spring pasture.
Each side will finish at between 25-30 lbs.
Price is $8/ lb hanging weight plus butchering costs. The cost averages at about $300/ side.
The first lambs will be ready in August or September.
