Saturday’s Celebration of Life for Pete Rees

Saturday May 14th at Forbes Hall, 2:00 pm, will be the memorial service for Retired Fire Chief and founding member of the TIVFD, Pete Rees.

Please park off the community centre grounds and make your way up the driveway to the centre gravel area where we will have some canopies and chairs set up.

The Cowichan Valley Fire Service Honour Guard, active and retired TIVFD  fire fighters, active Auxiliary Team members, serving Improvement District Trustees, and other fire service personnel will accompany Engine 1 marching behind the Honour Guard Piper, from the Fire Hall to Forbes Hall at 2 pm.  (Muster by 1:30 at the Fire Hall.).

Following a short fire service ceremony outside, you will be invited to enter Forbes Hall for Pete’s Celebration of Life, emcee’d by Retired TIVFD Fire Chief Ernie Hunter.  The family invites you to share your memories of Pete and Audree’s six decades on Thetis and there will be light refreshments served.

Even if you didn’t know Pete personally, please join us to celebrate a life well lived in the community he loved and served.

Have a really nice white bathroom cabinet 12" x 10" x 4' tall. Have a pic.

GOOD NEWS

I found out today I have Grade 3 cancer and all my appointments have been cancelled this week so the Doc can come up with a new plan of attack. So, I am home on Thetis Island for the whole week.

Cheers to the lot of you for your continued support.

2022 Thetis Athletic & Construction Skills Academy

Dear Parents,
In addition to our regular soccer practices, I am going to run the 2022 Thetis Athletic & Construction Skills Academy during July and August.  My intention is to provide lectures in the following areas:

A. Sports:
Cross-country running, swimming, ping pong, tennis, badminton, cycling, field hockey and various types of kinesthetic exercises, including gymnastic exercises, rope/tree climbing, headstands, hand walking, etc.   The idea is to get the athletes/students together two times a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays  (Mondays will stay for soccer practice) with Wednesdays as their Individual Training Day.  We will start at 10 am and finish at 12:00 or 1:00, depending on the interest and number of students.  We will start with sports at 10 am and in an hour or so we will move to work activities.

I intend to be serious about it.  It will not be a walk in the park.  There are already serious participants enrolled.  If you as a parent want your kid(s) to take part in dedicated physical activities during the summer, please contact me.  The numbers are not important.  I will work with one or 15 children and, as I have mentioned, the interest is there.

B:  Manual Skills:
I would like to engage women and men on Thetis who are good with tools and would like to share their skills with kids.  This part of the Academy is still being discussed, mainly for safety reasons, but I have a lot of hope I will find willing and good teachers in woodworking, auto mechanics and (if possible) other activities, such as blacksmithing.

If you are interested, please get back to me.  Again, this is not a fun activity.  It is about health and physical prowess.  I  expect dedication either for  one week, two weeks, three weeks, one month or 6 weeks - exactly as if they were in a camp.  When your family is away, the athletes will be excused.  However, if they are here, they will be expected to come – if they commit.  Arriving late, not being fully engaged, whining and/or generally bringing others down with complaints, will have necessary consequences.

If you think your child would benefit from the suggested activities, please contact me at jcerny07@gmail.com.  As an athlete and as a coach I have been in possibly one hundred or even more of these camps. They can mean a lot. They can change lives. It all depends.

Thetis Island Improvement District Update

At a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Thetis Island Improvement District on May 4th the consolidated financial statements for the year ending December 31st, 2021, were approved. The entire audit package is posted on the TIID site at: https://www.thetisislandfire.ca/tiid/financial/Thetis%20Island%20Improvement%20District%202021%20-Final%20Financial%20Statements.pdf

Highlights of the audit are:

  • Maintenance, Operations and Administration were under budget by $17,055
  • Capital Projects were over budget by $64,138, primarily due to the Water Tender replacement project.
  • The Capital Works (savings) Account increased by $8,288 to $298,122.

Furthermore, the Improvement District will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Saturday July 9th, 2022, at 11 AM at Forbes Hall Community Centre. This public meeting is to receive the audited financial statements for 2021, to report on the operations of the Thetis Island Volunteer Fire Department, the Improvement District, and whatever other items of business may be raised.

One trustees' term is up this year and Bill Dickie has agreed to stand for another term. At the AGM, we will call for nominations from the floor, and if an election is required, we will hold a secret ballot vote at that time.

More information will be posted as we get closer to the AGM.

Any questions, please do not hesitate to call.
