Thank You Clinic Volunteers

The first covid-19 Vaccination Clinic for community members over 80 years old was held at the firehall on Friday and was very successful.  It rained before and after, but not during.  The two VIHA Public Health nurses, Joanne and Julie, were happy to see everyone and are looking forward to coming back soon for the mass clinic for everyone under 80 down to 18.  Unfortunately, there is no announced date yet, but they are pushing our string uphill with us.  As soon as we get word, we will let eSPOKES know.

We had terrific support from great community volunteers:  Lis Kroeker, Jan and Charlotte Fesnoux, Anne-Marie Koeppen, Maureen Loiselle, Nan Beals and Michelle Sutter.  Firefighters Dave Tarris, Mike Ellis, Pierre Henry, Yuka Saito  and Grant Mottershead helped set up and stayed to assist, and Firefighters Brian Morita, John Gall, Jeffrey Thudian and Johnny Cullen Keidann helped them  with the tear-down and getting the place back to looking like a firehall.  In the background, Veronica Shelford was able to finally stop making updated lists for me to get this all organized.

Thank you all!

Lawrence Trail Flagging

On Saturday, the Trail Committee flagged the Lawrence (Community) Trail to verify the correct route.

Property owners along the route will be asked to walk the trail to ensure that it doesn't stray into uninvited territory.

Yellow tape has been used to mark the route from Kenwood Road to just past where the Lawrence Valley Loop joins it and will be removed once the process has been completed.

Sculling Oar

Seeking a longer heavy oar that might need a new home for sculling a small sailboat away from the dock into the breeze.

Boat for Sale and Free Storage

Boat for Sale

16ft Lund, side/center console. May leak but that's what older riveted boats do. Comes with a 50hp Yamaha 4 stroke, new tilt motor and fresh oil and filter.

Sitting on an EZ loader trailer with papers. Extras include 2 - 25 liter fuel tanks, battery, depth sounder, 2 Scotty manual down riggers, rod holders and more if you don't try to dicker.

Lots of work needs to be done to make this package ship shape but I've run out of energy. Paint, new trailer lights, trim, lots of fishing extras I'm happy to throw in.

Free

Two, non-functioning freezers for rodent proof feed storage or root-free garden beds.

On my truck now, will deliver on Thetis. Going to Bing Creek on Wednesday.

Sad News from Gabriola

Sad news of the loss of Chris Straw, Gabriola Island on Tuesday, Mar 16, 2021:

Chris Straw was one of the islanders killed in an unfortunate crane accident on Gabriola Island, on Mar 16, 2021. If those Thetis Islanders who attended the Nature House presentations, Chris was one of the presenters (I recall that there was standing room only) at the Nature House Re: Freighter Anchorages and an allied and strong community advocacy voice throughout the Salish Sea.

Chris Straw, Exec Dir. of the GAFA (Gabriolans Against Freighter Anchorages), committed family man, grandpa, and resident of Gabriola Island. Chris's loss was a tragic day/s for Chris's family, friends, the Gabriola Island Community, and the Anchorage Alliance Community throughout the Salish Sea.

I will miss Chris's energy and his desire to discover the truth, will be missed; his passion for the Gulf Islands' beauty; it always brought a smile to my face.

My condolences to all impacted.

There are no details at this time, but we will share any memorial information as it comes available to us.

TIVFD: Almost There

Congratulations to TIVFD members Pierre Henry, Johnny Cullen Keidann and Grant Mottershead for passing their First Responder practical medical skills tests on Sunday via live video streaming with the evaluator in greater Victoria.

Due to pandemic regulations this normally face to face course was altered to internet conferences and a whole lot of practice on their own.

After 58 hours of mixed instruction and drilling, and a LOT of study hours and homework, they have now  completed one written exam and the practical exam and have one on-line 150 question closed book exam to complete for their license.

They are doing this for you.
