Spring CVRD Area G Report

With many apologies, I offer this link to our Area G Director's report, which should have gone into the Spring issue of the Quarterly but was accidentally left out.  Lynne Smith has given us an enormous amount of aid and support and we hope everyone will read this.

If anyone would like a printed copy, or knows someone who doesn't have internet who would like one, please let me know at veronicashelford@gmail.com

Important: Over 80 yrs Count

The VIHA Clinical Coordinator has asked me today how many in our community are over 80 years old. They will send a team over before April 12th to vaccinate that group first.  They will then come back after April 12th and do the rest of the community adults on one day.

The glitch is that I can never tell how old anybody is...it’s not a skill I have ever needed.  I would estimate 15 persons here were born in 1941 or earlier, but I could be very much underestimating or overestimating.  VIHA needs a better estimation in order to calculate how much vaccine to bring.  I haven’t met everyone on the island.

If you, or your neighbour who doesn’t read eSPOKES, are in the 1921 to 1941 category, please drop me a note so I can adjust my guess.  You can send me your estimate too, and I will average the guesses.

Thanks!

Used Bathtubs Wanted

Do you have an old bathtub kicking around?

I would love to use it in my garden to grow veggies without cedar roots invading.  Can pick up.

26 Weeks to Emergency Preparedness

Dear Thetis Islanders,

To help you accomplish this, Cowichan Valley Emergency Management published an Emergency Preparedness Workbook available online at

https://www.cvrd.ca/DocumentCenter/View/84184/MIECM-Emergency-Preparedness-Workbook---2017?bidId=

The " 26 Weeks " segment is a mere two pages of the workbook that is full of valuable information and worth reading all the way through. Copies are also available from your LERN captain.

Week 9 recommended scouting out the hazards in your home and neighbourhood and mitigating those you can. ( page 15 -34)

Resuming at:

Prepare a First Aid kit
that includes prescription medications (keep a list as well), eyeglasses, bandages, sterile gauze pads, tape, scissors, tweezers, antibiotic ointment, and other items such as over the counter pain relievers. (see page 10). Consider taking a basic First Aid course.

Week 11

Give every family member specific safety tasks to do in an emergency. E.g.   designate one person to be in charge of turning off electricity (and /or propane), one to collect the emergency container, one to track down family members and make sure people with disabilities or special needs are provided for. Make sure someone is delegated to look after pets. (see pages 4 & 5 )

Wishing you a healthy and safe start to Spring.

Mary F, Petra A, Eleanor V, Gurk S and Virginia L.

VIHA – Includes Thetis Island in “Taking a Whole Community Approach” to Vaccinations

This quote from the Island Health webpage today concerning vaccination rollout. Good news for us, finally...we have been officially named.  More information to follow when we receive the date.

Fire Chief J. Caldbeck

“Taking a Whole Community Approach

Where communities with a small population (under 4,000 residents) and have challenges with accessibility (ie, accessible only by ferry or air or more than 3 hours ground travel from a hospital) health authorities will take a whole of community approach to immunization. Depending on the size of the community this may result in the entire adult population of the community having the opportunity to be vaccinated during a single health authority visit to the community (in one day or on consecutive days), or over two health authority visits. The following Island Health communities will be vaccinated through a whole community approach and details on when the vaccination clinics will occur will be communicated in the coming days.

Bamfield, Cortes Island, Denman Island, Gabriola Island, Galiano Island, Gold River, Hornby Island, Kyuquot, Lasqueti Island, Mayne Island, North Pender Island, Penelakut, Port Alice, Port Hardy, Port McNeil, Port Renfrew/Jordan River, Quadra Island, Read Island, Saturna Island, Sayward, Sointula, South Pender Island, Tahsis, Thetis Island, Tofino, Ucluelet, Zeballos

For residents over age 80 who live in these communities, if the whole community approach clinic is not scheduled prior to April 12th, Island Health will ensure you have the opportunity to be vaccinated in/close to your community prior to April 12th. Please contact the Island Health call centre during the week that you are eligible “

A couple of respondents indicated a desire for a cafe.

Thanks again for your participation. The Programming Outreach Committee will be in touch with leaders of previously offered activities to give them a chance to see the hall and discuss preferences for spaces and scheduling. For new activities we will extend an open invitation to begin a conversation about how people might want to share in their various interests.

Other community centres are now offering some low exertion activities so it is hoped that by May, following Covid protocols, the Forbes Hall Community Centre will have a soft opening to enable us to enjoy each others company again.
