Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at 8:07PM Covid-19 has been in our Health Region since March of 2020 and it was always probable that it would be here on Thetis Island during the past twelve months.
Recently anxiety has ramped up on our island and many people have questions about their risks and safety. The best source of updated and true information is the BC Centre of Disease Control, the BC CDC.
Lots of easily found information can is posted there, such as exposure risks, self-assessment tools, how long isolation lasts, etc.
VIHA and the BC CDC do not publish locations of private citizens, only of organizations (schools, care homes) and commercial businesses that have had an outbreak. Some businesses that have had an employee that tested positive from a community contact (not related to their job) will close as an abundance of caution (ie The Dog House Restaurant in Duncan several weeks ago) to deep clean etc., or simply to save money by laying off their employees for a while. These businesses are not considered a risk and the locations do not appear on the BC CDC website.
Contact risk is considered to be persons who are within 2 metres of a virus-positive person for longer than 15 minutes without a mask. If you consider yourself to be at risk because you and a possible COVID-positive person were within close contact for more than 15 minutes and neither of you were taking precautions to protect each other, then you can request to be tested. Use the self-assessment tool on the BC CDC website to determine if you need to.
The Fire Department will direct you to the best information available for risk reduction. But the TIVFD will NOT discuss possible cases on Thetis Island, nor would you want us to. We take the Privacy Act and patient confidentiality very seriously and you can rely upon our members to never discuss with others any of your personal health issues.
Please access the BC CDC website and navigate around it for info that will answer your questions: http://covid-19.bccdc.ca/ or go to the VIHA website to access another trove of info: https://www.islandhealth.ca/learn-about-health/covid-19/outbreaks-and-exposures
And, did you know that Thetis Island has a Medical Health Officer? You can call the MHO for the Cowichan Region, Mill Bay to Yellow Point, Thetis and Valdes Islands Dr. Shannon Waters, 250-737-2020 in Duncan.

Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at 8:05PM Join your neighbours for a virtual tea (bring your own tea and biscuit) on Sunday, February 14th at 11 a.m. via a ZOOM meeting.
This is a chance to say “hi” without a mask on and have a little visit...perhaps even “meet” someone new to our island.
Email firechief@thetisislandfire.ca before Sunday with the Subject line “Valentine” and I will send you the link to join the event.

Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at 8:13PM Issued: February 9th, 2021 at 15:30 PST
Weather Event Impacts:
· Health concerns for the most vulnerable population, due to colder than seasonal weather
· Freezing pipes and other impacts to infrastructure
· Power outages possible due to winds and accumulating snow
· Challenging travel conditions due to snow, and possible blowing snow & freezing rain
· Increasing avalanche hazard
· Due to the mild first half of winter and late season arrival of first arctic air, public may be underprepared for sudden change to wintery weather conditions
Timing:
· Cold event: Tuesday February 9th to Saturday February 13th
· Wind event: Tuesday February 9th for North and Central Coast spreading to South Coast Wednesday February 10th. Continuing through this weekend.
· Coastal Snow event: Friday night February 12th to Monday February 15th
Key Points:
· Modified arctic air continues to deepen over coastal BC, priming communities for low elevation snow
· Coldest temperatures will be Wednesday – Friday with temperatures 5°C to 10 °C below normal
· High pressure over the BC interior will promote moderate to strong northeasterly outflow winds through mainland fjords and impact portions of Vancouver Island
· Low temperatures plus wind will produce wind chill values of -10 to -20
· Periods of light snow Wednesday for South Coast. Chance of snow for southern Vancouver Island Thursday
· Significant snowfall event likely begins Friday night for entire coastline and continues Saturday
· Strongest winds, and highest potential for localized blowing snow Friday night – Saturday night for mainland fjords, the Gulf Islands, Victoria, and west coast Vancouver Island
· The final weather system in this series arrives late this weekend and will likely bring warming temperatures and a messy transition from snow to rain in low-lying areas. Freezing rain is possible during that transition, particularly for inland Vancouver Island valleys, eastern Fraser Valley and Howe Sound
· Outlook: A gradual return to near-seasonal temperatures will begin February 16. Weather pattern likely to remain active.
Forecast Certainty:
Moderate – regarding the longevity and severity of below seasonal temperatures.
Moderate – Moderate to strong northeasterly outflow winds persist through mainland fjords this week. Transitioning to strong to very strong southeasterly winds associated with the Friday/weekend systems
Low - the amount of snowfall accumulation is uncertain, as is the eventual transition to rain or mix of rain and snow.

Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at 8:12PM The truck and trailer will be mostly empty so I'd be happy to take your clean and sorted recycling too. (Not doing garbage).
Your stuff will need to be clean and sorted into the different categories handled by Bing's:
- paper and cardboard can be together
- glass
- stretchy plastic eg. shopping bags
- crinkly plastic eg. potato chip bags
- tin cans, milk bottles, plastic bottles etc. Can be together
If your stuff is mostly sorted before you get to my place it will make it much quicker.
Please bring directly to our place between 10am and 2pm today (Tuesday). The circle driveway will be setup for easy and covid safe sorting / drop off.
I'll be toiling in the general area at a safe distance.
Larger qty of already sorted stuff: directly into trailer
Smaller qty of stuff: place directly into my labelled big blue drums (one for each type of stuff), I will bag together and toss into trailer at the end of the day.

Monday, February 8, 2021 at 1:03PM Is there a baker on the island that would share an amount of germ starter such that I could regularly bake bread aboard? A recipe and instructions would be a welcome bonus.

Monday, February 8, 2021 at 12:57PM TIRRA has been producing welcome packages for newcomers for the last 2 years. The package contains many brochures and local information. Included materials such as current phone book, gift certificates from Thetis proprietors, Quarterly samples, Emergency preparedness, Community Plan, Sustainability Guide and various Islands Trust brochures.
It is timely to check with the you, the community, as to whether you have any suggestions.
The original team collaborated on a welcome brochure which is one of the locally created components: it can be reviewed/viewed on the Community webpage under TIRRA. During the initial creative process, we found it very difficult to fit as much information on the brochure as we did! So obviously if we add something, we need to remove something. A difficult balance. However, your feedback is important.
Please submit your suggestions for amendments/additions/deletions to tirra@thetisisland.net
Also, if you have brochures or information you think would be good stand-alone materials for a welcome package, let us know.
Thank you in advance,
The TIRRA Welcome Committee: By the Way!!! We are still looking for one or two people to take this project on moving forward!
