THANK YOU, THETIS ISLAND
I want to express my thanks to everyone that joined us for the Cowichan Valley regional District Electronic Town Hall meeting.
Despite being provided very short notice about the meeting 44 residents and property owners attended the meeting.
The meeting was hosted by the CVRD, Economic Development Cowichan Manger Barry O'Riordan.
Panelists included CAO David Leitch of the Strathcona Regional district, CVRD CAO Brian Carruthers, Area G director Lynne Smith, TIRRA president Wendy Hinsperger, myself and other staff from the CVRD.
David Leitch provided a comprehensive overview of the 2.4 million dollar proposal to deliver fiber optic connections to every home on Thetis Island. Brian Carruthers spoke to the CVRD establishing a service to provide the required 10% community funding through a long term loan of $240,000 that would be repaid through dividends from subscriber service fees. The cost of the service to subscribers is expected to be competitive at the same level of service from other providers.
The purpose of the meeting was to publicly advise the community of the project and the details available at this time, in order to gauge the interest of the community to support the CVRD and the SRD in submitting a funding proposal to the federal Government Broadband fund. A Q&A was held at the end where many residents were able ask questions.
I expect the CVRD and the SRD to proceed on submitting an application on the communities behalf. The CVRD will be providing more information on the project and planning for an alternate funding referendum for our community once funding is secured.
I want to emphasize this is an opportunity to seek funding not commit the community to the project, your opportunity to endorse this project will come once the funding is made available.
More information will be forthcoming.
I want to thank all of those that have contributed to trying to bring Internet connectivity to Thetis Island including the Thetis Island [Community] Economic Enhancement Corporation, Area G director Lynne Smith, TIRRA and many others.
