TIID, Islands Trust, & TIRRA: Fibre Optics Opportunity

Regardless of the intent of TICEEC in their communication to all Place Speak members, we are saddened that their approach feels divisive.

We should have one common goal: to bring better internet connectivity and efficacy to 100% of residents and businesses who desire fibre optics as a solution, with no taxation or cost implications to Thetis Island. If this baseline can be agreed as the desired end goal, then every funding proposal meeting this goal should be fully explored.

There is no commitment or obligation attached to the City West/SRD proposal. They are moving ahead to seek a 100% funded project. If the necessary federal government funding is approved, then we are morally and democratically required to engage the entire community. No contract will be entered into without full disclosure and concurrence to proceed. Concurrence involves instructing the CVRD to proceed, which can be facilitated via a petition of residents and businesses. Only with approval to proceed, by the community, will the CVRD expedite the creation of a contract.

Since there is no current commitment from the federal government to reopen funding for internet at a later date, we believe our Community will be better positioned if we have a proposal in the system, regardless of whether all the intimate details are fully understood.

There is no current proposal from Telus being submitted for this particular funding opportunity. Making comparisons about the Telus vs. City West/SRD seems a moot point when considering our options today.

The 3 Thetis Island government groups, (TIRRA, TI, TIID) issued letters of support that were not specific to a CW/SRD, but rather to any fully funded fibre optics proposal.

Please engage with any and all community partners to discuss and inform.

Collaboration is the most important tool we have.

Amazing Islanders

Well our first day on Thetis was an eventful one... our moving truck got stuck in mud and snow halfway down our hill.

To the amazing people who came to the rescue - Mike down the road led the charge seeking out some added muscle from Ben and his tractor. Thank you so very much to both of you. And also to Alisha for a friendly hello offering further help and support.

We are convinced after today that we have come to an incredible place.

Hopefully we can return the favour one day.

Natural Dye Project

I am looking for avocado pits and onion skins for a natural dye project. The avocado pits need to be clean and either frozen or dried. The onion skins also need to be dry and it's just the outermost papery skins that I need. Red or yellow onion skins mixed together is fine.

If you have room to store the avocado skins as well as the pits, I will take them but the pits are more productive.

Please contact me if you have any questions. I am happy to provide freezer bags or jars to store these items and I will pick them up when you are ready.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Looking for Leftover Metal Siding

I'm looking for about 50 square feet of metal siding, any "system", in any color (or even combination of colors) other than grey.  If you have some extra pieces left over and unused, let me know.

Snow Men * Snow Men * Snow Men

Howdy y'all

I've had a few phone calls to thank me for the laugh and just making their day. So if you too are wondering if I am responsible for the big snowman at the corner of North Cove and Pioneer Roads, no I'm not. (Well maybe somewhat distantly 🤠)

Joe Lange, myself and likely a few others have been out rolling snow into large balls along the roadsides and it's likely some of Joe's that were rolled together and artistically clad, mmmm perhaps humorously clad. So for all who have had a chuckle at North Cove and Pioneer and are wondering, "Who Dun It?" y'all can thank Raglan, our eldest grandson for lightening your day and putting a chuckle in yer' belly.

Distantly Responsible

TICA Announces Art Commission for Forbes Hall Community Centre

Last spring, the TICA board was approached by an anonymous donor who wished to facilitate commissioning an original Indigenous artwork by Penelakut artist Maynard Johnny Jr. (Coast Salish - Kwagiulth) in the spirit of reconciliation.  After careful consideration, the TICA Board has accepted the donation, which will fund the creation, fabrication, and installation of the artwork on the exterior of the expanded Forbes Hall Community Center. The funds will also support an appropriate dedication and ceremony involving members of the Penelakut community.

The art will speak to the historical links between Thetis and Penelakut Islands and to the Thetis community’s connection with the Penelakut people, who have lived on these lands for thousands of years. A background story of the images in the art was gifted by Penelakut Elder Florence James and will be part of the installation.

We look forward to sharing more about the art installation and are grateful that TICA will now have two major artworks by Penelakut artists on display at our new hall.

Gus Modeste's carving will be mounted and featured on the wall directly ahead as one enters Forbes Hall.

Green Metal Roof taken from our Property

Would the person or persons who took the green metal roof from our property, beside Pilkey Point Road between Blue Heron Ridge driveway and the hairpin bend before Cufra Cliffs, sometime between Wednesday, Feb 3rd and Thursday, Feb 12th, please return it. Although the old vehicle shelter had collapsed, I do have plans to use the metal roof for another project.  The roof material was taken from private property and had not been abandoned, so if you could please return the metal roof to where you took it from, it would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Chris

The Jungle Telegraph

The beauty of a small community is the rapid spread of news.

On Tuesday afternoon I was taken to Duncan for medical attention. I foolishly injured myself, on the mend now.

I understand the concern in these strange times.

I want to assure my fellow islanders it was not COVID related.

I am no more of a threat to our island’s well-being than I ever was.
