We are looking for some childcare starting as early as May. If you or someone you know likes kids, lives on Thetis in the summer and is looking for a fun gig with lots of flexibility, this could be right for you! Coming home from university? A high schooler looking for a summer job? Keep reading! 

We’re looking for someone who wants to hang with our 2 little guys, ages 3 and 6 (just 1 until school is done). We have lots of flexibility to accommodate your schedule and some summer camps planned so this is ideal for someone who is hoping to work 20-30 hours per week with some time off. Ideal availability is from May to end of August but could begin later.

House Concert - VINTA

Memorial - Michael Philip

“It’s not Mike… it’s Michael.”

We can still hear his voice—half serious, half laughing—whenever someone forgot to say his name in full. That was Michael. Full of character, always smiling, and never without a story to share.

He loved football. He loved his family deeply. And we all knew that if he wasn’t at the pub, he was with his dad or his sister in Nanaimo. In recent years, he made his home on his sailboat at the marina—a place he truly loved. Thetis Island wasn’t just where he lived, it was where he belonged.

Michael was a constant presence, a true friend, and part of the heart of the marina. His absence leaves a space that cannot be filled. Seeing his boat now, and feeling his absence, is something we carry together.

Water On and Dishes in the Sink…

On Thursday at 2:00 pm we received a notification that the emergency water shut off had been employed at Forbes Hall.

It was discovered that the dish sink in the main kitchen had been left “on”, and there were dirty dishes in the sink. The faucet has a main tap and individual hot and cold taps.
 

The Main Kitchen is for large group cooking and commercial uses, with all dishes going through the sanitizer during prep and service, while the Beverage Station is intended for casual use with the sanitizer being used as the dish trays fill during the week,

A volunteer was called out to remedy the situation, and then another volunteer will be needed to move the dishes to the Beverage Station, hand wash them, readying them for sanitizing.

As there was no scheduled use of the hall at that time, so no way for us to contact the users directly.

Forbes Hall runs beautifully by users caring for it with respect.

There's the mother of all widow-makers dangling from a tree on the east side of Foster Point Road, a few meters south of Cunningham Road.

New Members wanted for the Structure Protection Unit (SPU)

The SPU is an auxiliary support team to the Thetis Island Volunteer Fire Department (TIVFD). Our role is to protect buildings with water sprinklers in the event of a wildfire threat, and also to promote FireSmart resiliency on Thetis. There are some relics and some folks pulling double duty in the group, and new volunteers are needed to maintain an elite force of 10 to 12 people. The function of this and the other auxiliaries (Water hauling, Rest & rehab, Traffic control, Communications) is to allow the Fire Department to focus on the active fire fighting bit by reducing or eliminating some of the peripheral (non-hot zone) activities.

The coveted Document Specialist position is surprisingly still open if you are interested in a less physical role.

Opportunity: Learn what you can do to protect your own property. Get to know some of your Thetis Island neighbors. Get some exercise while doing your volunteering bit for the island.

Prerequisites: None. The main thing is willingness to learn. Experience with pumps, hoses, sprinklers, ladders is ideal but not necessary.

Time commitment: On average we end up about 2 hours per month in the Fire season (April or May thru Oct or Nov). This time is typically spent doing a practice run of setting up sprinklers to create a humidity bubble around the structure. Some additional training time is needed periodically.
