Forbes Hall Expansion Update: Fundraising Campaign

In late July, TICA sent out a request for financial support to complete the Forbes Hall Project. Already, there has been $58,672 received in direct donations, and $28,840 pledged, either monthly or annually for 1 to 5 years, for a combined total of $87,512.  This is a remarkable show of generosity and support, and we sincerely thank all who contributed.

Thank you for returning donations and/or pledge forms by August 20th. The response was important for planning purposes for the completion of Forbes Hall. 

However, the Campaign continues! There remains $507,488 to be raised or sourced, and we encourage those who have not yet contributed to please consider a donation or pledge, as every dollar counts, and every pledge makes a difference. We will be moving up again very soon, but in the meantime chainsawing, mowing, milling, chipping etc. can recommence.

Island-raised Thanksgiving Turkeys

We've been raising your happy Thanksgiving turkeys and we are now taking orders for a very limited number of birds! These turkeys have lived a healthy and happy existence and will be ready for your freezer at the end of September (exact date TBD). Although we cannot guarantee sizes, we are watching their weight and plan to confirm the processing date with the hope of providing you with average sized turkeys.

BC Ferries Announces Mandatory Face Coverings

As of August 24, customers must wear face covering while travelling 

VICTORIA – Beginning August 24, BC Ferries will require customers to wear non-medical masks or face coverings at terminals and while on board ferries. 

All walk-on and vehicle passengers will be required to wear face coverings at all times when at a BC Ferries terminal or on a BC Ferries ship, with the exception being if a customer is inside a vehicle or consuming food or drinks while maintaining physical distance. Also exempt are customers with an underlying medical condition or disability that inhibits the ability to wear a face covering, those who are unable to place or remove a face covering without assistance, and children under two years of age. This requirement also applies to BC Ferries employees, except those working behind a physical barrier or within employee only areas while maintaining appropriate physical distance.

“BC Ferries’ priority is the health and safety of our employees and customers,” said

BC Ferries President & CEO Mark Collins. “We urge and expect our customers to behave responsibly when they are travelling with us. Please do not travel if you feel sick. While using the ferry system you are required to wear a face covering at all times and maintain appropriate physical distance. Travellers not following this requirement can be banned from travel. Please follow the directions of BC Ferries staff and crew.”  

BC Ferries has a number of additional preventive measures in place, including support for physical distancing, screening customers on arrival at the ticket booth, allowing customers to remain in their vehicles on all decks during the sailing, enhanced cleaning, physical barriers and reduced seating density. 

“We understand that many customers are anxious about COVID-19 and our employees are doing great work to accommodate customers during this time,” continued Collins. “I want to remind customers that we do not tolerate any form of abuse, including verbal abuse, towards our employees. Failure to follow direction and abuse of any kind will result in denial of travel.”

Paddles Found

"Much to our amazement, the 2 paddles that went missing on our trip to Thetis in July were found and returned to us while on Thetis recently.

Apparently found by a beach-fire site (not good) in North Cove we’re thrilled to have them back.

We wanted residents to know that it looks like their disappearance was more mischief and less thievery.

We’re grateful to this tight community and to eSpokes for its great communication.”

I am continuing to exchange books and dvds from my home.

If you would like a particular item, let me know.  I have the borrower's card box at home.  I can let you know who has what, if it is not boxed in the container.

Have you been for a tour of the hall?  There is a small office for the library (no more boxes of books in the library), glass sliders onto a small deck at the back and skylights!  The rest of it is great also.
