Soup's On ~ Volunteers Needed

THIS IS A REMINDER!

To make it another successful season we need more help and involvement from the community. Some of our cooks and team members have fallen by the wayside or have moved away from Thetis Island. If you are interested in volunteering please plan to attend our start up meeting on FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14th, 9.30 am in Forbes Hall.

Please be sure that your calendars are marked for this event as this is an important time to get new information, select your preferred dates and team members. This meeting will be followed by a kitchen protocol meeting for any newcomers or those who would like to refresh their memories.

We need cooks, team leaders and kitchen helpers. For every "Soup's On" event we must have a person in the kitchen who holds Food Safe 1 (or above) Certification to be responsible for making sure that all Food Safe protocols are followed.. This does not necessarily have to be the cook although it is preferable.

Please read the following information re FOOD SAFE.

Food Safe Certification that was acquired prior to July 29th 2013 expired on July 29th 2018. To re-certify it will be necessary for you to do a refresher course. Refresher courses and for those wishing to take Food Safe for the first time you can access them online by going to:

The second order of WASP Wildfire Sprinkler Protection Kits was filled and are arriving this week. I have another wait-list started and need eight more orders so if you missed this on the first two go-around this year there is still time to order for this season. Some insurers will give you a deduction for having the kit mounted during wildfire season, according to media reports. The kit costs $155. Including taxes and delivery to the Thetis firehall. Here is the manufacturer’s link:http://www.waspwildfire.com/

Contact Jeannine at chief11@telus.net to order.

Family Fun Day ~ Thank You!

A big thank you to all who came out to support our annual Family Fun Day on Saturday!

The rain drops began just as the event started but that didn’t stop many of you brave islanders who showed up for the games.  With some prayers answered, the sun came out in time for more brave souls to get wet under the dunk bucket.  Thanks to many generous donors, we had a bounty of 44 prizes for the balloon raffle which sold out in less than 15 minutes!  Special thanks go to our pie team, Tatiana Nemchin, Mike Latte and our fantastic MC and auctioneer Joel Delaquis!  We couldn’t have done it without all you talented pie makers and generous bidders who helped make our live pie auction such a great success, raising nearly $1900!

My sincere thanks to all the volunteers who organized the activities and to those who helped on the day: Tim French, Lynn Hunter, Theresa Elsie, Chad Kerr, Ken Redman, Matt Hess, Don Sinclair, Cat Fielding, Kat Urton, Celine Valestrand, Tatiana Nemchin, Ellen Rush, Natasha Gousseva, Anne-Marie Koeppen, Jo Williams, Geoff Seiler, Rebecca Andison, Hortenza Nawatzki Jenny Aronson, Carolyn Askew, and Alisha Rennie.  Also, many thanks to Capernwray for their very generous contribution of $500 to cover the food expenses for the event!

Thank you to all who attended and donated to this years Family Fun Day and made it such a success, raising $3,750.55.  All proceeds will be split between TICA & TICF. What an amazing community we live in!

Thank you for your support!

Thetis Island Elementary School Requests

Genny Redman and Simone Luckham are very excited to be teaching at Thetis Elementary School this year. There is a wonderful proverb that says , " It takes a village to raise a child."   We, Simone, Genny and the Thetis Island Parent Association, would really like to embrace this philosophy and involve the Thetis Island Community in our little school.

A. Needed: Fruit

In September we are planning on processing some fruit with the students at Thetis Elementary School. We will be selling what we make and the funds will be going to refugees.

So if you have extra fruit we are looking for the following:  quince, apples, pears and plums.

We would like to have them in the first week of September.  However, if you have fruit right now, I will be home this week and you could drop it off at my house.  (59 Pilkey Point road) I am gone from the 21st of September until the 25th but then I will be home again until school starts.

We would also like to borrow a good fruit dryer and if you have any pint canning jars sitting around we could really make use of them as well.

B. Needed: Listeners

We will be starting the volunteer reading program in mid September.  This program will be run very much like the volunteer reading program that was done when Arlene Kasting was teaching at the school.  We hope to have two volunteers every morning that will listen to students read.  So it would be a commitment of one morning a week for about an hour. I know there are times when people travel and are away.  We do not want this to stop you from volunteering as we can make it work and possibly have people listening to students read at different times of the year. If you are interested in helping out with this program, please let me know.

c. Needed: volunteer soccer coach

We are looking for anyone that is interested in volunteering to coach soccer.  We could run this as part of our P.E. program and have it one day a week near the end of school day.  Simone and I would help out with the coaching.  Parents can also participate as they could come a bit earlier if they are picking up their kids and play some soccer.

You can contact Genny by email at: gredman@sd79.bc.ca

or call 250-246-2465, if you are interested in volunteering or you would like to donate fruit.

Thank you

Genny Redman
